Night watch and the sealed tin
Rain lashes the cottage roof in sustained sheets. The stove burns low, kettle steaming. Kevin sits at the table with the shortwave, Jenny propped in bed with the rusted tin E on her lap. The barometer reads 1014 hPa and rising. The tide is high and still climbing. Wind gusts shake the shutters.
The morning air is heavy and still, the wet season heat clinging to the cottage as the tide sits high. Kevin heads out to the dock to check the structural integrity of the landward beam before the tide turns, while Jenny remains inside, battling a lingering fever and a throbbing ankle as she focuses on the task of opening the heirloom seed tin.
Kettle's hot. Want a mug before I walk the dock?
Pour two mugs of coffee from the steaming kettle, set one on the bedside table within Jenny's reach, keep one at the table beside the shortwave.

way. Just... don't stay out long.
Trace the rusted edge of the tin lid with a thumb.

Back before the tide turns.
Take the coffee mug, pull the oilskin from the hook by the door, step out onto the porch and secure the latch against the wind, then walk down the path toward the dock.

Jenny — pull the blanket tighter around my ankle and watch the rain blur the window.
