The Calm Before the Rain

The air grows still as the sun begins to dip, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the hot dust.

Kevin secured the dinghy's storm lines and battened the generator shed against the rising wind, then forced the sticky east shutter closed and locked it with a through-bolt. Jenny tended her infected ankle with a fresh sea beet and mint poultice, wrapped it tightly, and clutched the rusted seed tin while the storm broke overhead.

🔧 Kevin04:02

Storm's rolling in. Going to secure the dinghy and tarp the generator.

Walk to the dock to check dinghy mooring lines and storm anchor warp tension.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Barometer was falling all afternoon — knew it would come. Need to get the dinghy lines checked and the generator covered before it blows hard.

🌿 Jenny04:03

Don't stay out too long, the rocks will be slick as glass.

Sit on the edge of the bed and wrap the sea much poultice tightly around my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast and my ankle is throbbing in time with the thunder starting to roll.

🔧 Kevin04:04

Won't. Just checking the warp and the chafe points.

Inspect the dinghy's storm anchor warp, doubled stern spring, and bow line for chafe where they run over the gunwale and mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the rocks. Tide's rising on wet limestone — one slip and I'm in the water again. But the dinghy's the only way off this rock if something goes wrong.

🌿 Jenny04:05

The wind is already turning. Come in before it gets really sideways.

Lean back against the pillows and watch the rain hit the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts to the west, that rain will Soak the generator before he can even get the tarp down.

🔧 Kevin04:06

Easing the stern spring a hand's breadth. Be right in.

Ease the doubled stern spring line at the mooring ring to give the dinghy more swing room as the swell builds, then walk back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west-northwest. Swell will build fast in the channel. Dinghy's holding but the stern spring's taking the load — need to ease it before the cleat pulls the transom.

🌿 Jenny04:07

way back. The sky is turning black.

Reach for the tin of seeds and trace the rust on the lid with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked to the bone just to be precise about an inch of rope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:08

Generator next. Then the east shutter.

Walk to the generator shed, check the storm lashings on the tarp, batten down any loose corners with timber strips.

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's gone bruised purple over the water. Rain's coming sideways now. Good — dinghy's got room to breathe. Need to get the generator tarp battened and the porch shutter dogged down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:09

Be careful with the latch, it's finicky.

ing the blanket up to my chest and shiver as the draft coming off the floor.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now; I hope the shutter bolts hold against this gust.

🔧 Kevin04:10

Tarp corner's lifting. Battening it now.

Secure the lifting north corner of the generator tarp with a timber strip and rocks, then check the storm lashings on the shed itself.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold. Floor draft's been there since the northeast foundation shifted. Generator tarp's holding but the north corner's lifting — wind's getting under it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:11

way back, the rain is coming in for real.

clutch the tin of seeds to my chest and listen to the first lashes against the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is catching the shed now, I can hear the whole structure straining.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:12

Doing the shutter now. Two minutes.

Walk to the east porch shutter, force the sticky latch closed, drive the 10mm through-bolt through the hasp to lock it down.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hammering now. Generator's buttoned up. East porch shutter's the last loose end — latch sticks when the frame swells. Need to dog it down before the wind rips it off the hinges.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:13

way up, Kevin, it's starting to pour.

pull my knees to my chest and watch the water streak down the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is howling through the stone walls now, I hope those bolts are deep.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:14

Shutter's dogged. Coming in.

Walk back to the cottage, step onto the porch, shake off the rain, and go inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Shutter's bolted. Porch is wet but the cottage is tight. Rain's loud on the roof — sounds like the Bay of Biscay. Inside now. Dry off. Check Jenny's ankle. Fire up the stove for something hot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:15

Get by the stove, I'll put the kettle on.

stand up slowly and wince as I shift weight to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's soaked to the bone, and the storm is just getting started.
