Preparation for the Arrival

Kevin and Jenny meet back at the cottage as the sun begins to dip and the clouds gather on the horizon.

Kevin inspects the dock during the low tide, checking for structural weaknesses near the northeast corner. Jenny focuses on the cottage, monitoring her ankle and preparing materials for the supply boat's arrival. The heat is heavy as the onshore breeze begins its slow turn.

🔧 Kevin04:44

Jenny, the barometer's dropped again. We need to check the dock stringers before dark.

walk toward the dock to inspect the northeast corner patch where the wood's been weeping since the last storm surge

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's fallen another three points since noon. That supply boat window's closing fast, and the dock's still got that crack forming near the east piling.

🌿 Jenny04:45

The soil is already too soft, Kevin. We'll lose the seedlings by dawn.

wipe dirt from my hands on my jeans and follow him to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that storm hits before I finish, the north ridge will wash them out before they even root.

🔧 Kevin04:45

Seedlings can be replanted. Dock goes, we don't get resupplied. Come on.

continue walking to the dock, pulling a flashlight from my belt as the light fades

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the soil — seen it turn to slurry overnight here. But the dock takes the crane weight tomorrow. If that east stringer fails under load, we lose the whole finger pier and whatever the boat brings.

🌿 Jenny04:47

What if the boat doesn't come when they said? What if the swell shifts west?

shine my flashlight toward the northeast corner of the dock where the wood is weeping.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock fails, we're cut off. But if I lose those seeds in the mud, I lose everything.

🔧 Kevin04:47

Boat comes or it doesn't. Dock holds either way. Shine the light on that joint — where the new sister meets the old stringer.

crouch at the northeast corner, running fingers along the epoxy patch where the greenheart sister plate bolts to the original timber, checking for fresh weep or movement

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking the question I've been turning over since the radio crackled. Three days at high tide, two-hour window. Captain acknowledged. But I've watched this channel eat schedules for breakfast.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:49

It's weeping already. I can see the salt forming around the bolts.

hold the beam of light steady to the joint, looking for any hairline cracks in the sealant.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy is holding, but the wood underneath feels like wet cardboard. If the tide rises, those bolts will pull like toothpicks.

🔧 Kevin04:51

Weep means water's getting in. That's what kills timber first. Check the bolts - any give there, we're looking at replacement by tomorrow morning.

reach for my torque wrench and check the 10mm through-bolts where the sister plate meets the old stringer, feeling for any play or movement in the joint

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's creeping under the sealant. Epoxy's holding but barely. If the tide pushes hard tomorrow, that joint could blow clean through.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny04:52

They don't give yet, but the wood is mushy around the heads.

press my thumb against the area around the bolt, feeling for the resistance of the wood fibers.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is too soft. If I tighten them now, I'll just strip the threads right out of the rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:52

Need washers. Big ones. Spread the load before the crane hits it. Got fender washers in the workshop.

stand up, brush salt from my knees, and head back toward the cottage workshop to grab the box of stainless fender washers and a handful of 10mm nyloc nuts

💭 peek at the thought
Mushy wood around bolt heads means the rot's already eaten past the surface. Greenheart's tough but not immortal. We sistered it three days ago — should've held longer. Tomorrow's crane load will crush those fibers if we don't spread the pressure.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:53

Get the widest ones we have. I'll check the tension once the tide comes in.

stay crouched, watching the water start to lap at the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
If I use the washers, maybe I can buy time until the boat arrives, but the rot is deep.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:55

Good. Keep that flashlight steady. I need to see every drop where it's coming through.

grab my flashlight from the cottage workbench, stuff it in my pack along with the torque wrench and a handful of the widest fender washers we have, then head back out toward the dock with Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Widest washers means we're talking 30mm diameter or bigger. Hope we have enough. Tide's coming in fast with the barometer dropping.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny04:55

The tide is coming faster than the forecast said.

follow him to the dock, keeping the beam fixed on the joint where the wood meets the stringer.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, I can't get to the mainland. The seeds won't matter if I'm stranded here.
