Low Tide Discovery

Kevin and Jenny meet at the shoreline as the tide reaches its lowest point. The air is heavy with the scent of salt.

The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shelf. The air is a stagnant, humid 30°C, making the wet-season humidity cling to the skin. Kevin and Jenny are on the south beach, assessing the damage and preparing for the supply boat still ten days away.

🌿 Jenny06:31

The boat is two days out.

Jenny wipes grit from her palm and stares at a tangled piece of driftwood near the tide line.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the horizon again while I'm looking at the way the sand is pulling away from the roots.

Copy that. Dock's holding. Ring bolt solid at high tide yesterday. Lines doubled.

walk the tide line toward the driftwood, scanning for anything useful — rope, timber, floats — while the water's low

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. That's tight but doable if the weather holds. The barometer's steady at 1004, but this humidity feels like something brewing.

🌿 Jenny06:33

Check the sea beet seedlings again. The ground is too weeping.

Jenny kneels in the sand, touching the damp earth near the garden edge to check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the hardware while the island is literally reshaping itself under our feet.

🔧 Kevin06:33

Checked this morning. Damping-off in four lettuce cells and two pepper. Bagged and burned. The tomato and basil are holding at true leaf. Soil auger's stuck at the west wall corner — bit seized on a root. I'll clear the intercept trench on the north slope tomorrow if the ground firms. That'll pull water off the garden beds.

crouch beside her, press two fingers into the wet sand near the garden edge, feeling the water table rise underneath

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's been weeping for weeks. If I don't get drainage sorted before the boat comes, the seedlings'll rot in the trays. Ground's too wet to work heavy machinery anyway.

🌿 Jenny06:35

The ground won't firm by own. It's already saturated.

Jenny pulls her hand back from the mud, looking at the grit on her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about trenches while the soil is turning to soup enough to swallow the seeds.

🔧 Kevin06:35

Then I dig it wet. Trench follows the contour, drains to the existing gully. Mattock's sharp. Got greenheart shoring planks staged if the sides collapse.

stand, wipe sand off fingers on trousers, glance toward the north ridge where the garden beds sit above the weeping slope

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The intercept trench needs digging whether the ground firms or not. Water's already undermining the north wall. I've got the mattock and the auger's clear now. Just means working in muck.

🌿 Jenny06:37

If the gully chokes, the whole ridge goes with the sea.

Jenny stands up slowly, her knees popping, and traces the path of a tension crack in the sand with her toe.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to dig into a landslide. The island is already giving way.

🔧 Kevin06:38

Then I build a check dam. Greenheart cores, copper sheeting, sandbags. Prevents debris from plugging the trench outlet.

pull the notebook from the cottage pocket, flip to the south slope drainage sketch, trace the tension crack with a finger before snapping it shut

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. One clogged gully and the whole garden's slope washes into the beach. I've got sandbags staged. I can build a check dam at the gully mouth with the greenheart cores and copper sheeting.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny06:39

The sand is too loose for the weight of sandbags.

Jenny looks at the heavy clouds, then back at the ridge, her stomach tightening with hunger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's building dams for a flood that's already inside the soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:39

Then I drive the cores as piles. Three-foot sections, sledge them to refusal. Stack the bags on the cribbing, not the sand. Copper sheeting seals the face.

turn toward the dock where the greenheart cores are staged under tarp, calculating lengths and sledge weight in my head

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the soil. Knows the saturation. Sandbags sink in muck. Need something that spreads the load — timber cribbing, or drive the greenheart cores deep as piles.
