Afternoon storm preparations

Kevin and Jenny are on the porch of the keeper's cottage. The sky has gone a uniform flat grey, cloud base lowering. Wind is picking up from the northeast, gusting through the garden and rattling the shade cloth anchors. They have a few hours before full dark to finish battening the cottage and dock for the medevac departure.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny08:35

Check the tension on the shade cloth again, Kevin. The gusts are catching the edges.

Stands up slowly, limping slightly, toward the garden wall to inspect the anchor lines.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind shifts south, the boat won't be able to get into the cove regardless of what the radio says.

🔧 Kevin08:36

Cloth first. Then I'm walking the dock. You stay on the wall.

walk to the garden and inspect the shade cloth anchor points, tugging each line to test tension

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left ankle still. Good she's moving, but the limp says the swelling hasn't dropped like she thinks. I'll check the cloth first, then the dock lines — she shouldn't be walking that slope alone with the clay weeping.

🌿 Jenny08:37

The north corner is fraying. We need to double the stakes there before the tide comes up.그런DO: Leans against the stone wall of the cottage, watching the way the sea beets ripple in the wind while opening her notebook to sketch the shifting cloud formations.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too focused on the hardware; he doesn't see the way the wind is already testing the soil stability.

🔧 Kevin08:37

North corner's in the weep zone. I'll drive fresh stakes deeper, past the clay. You sketch. I'll handle it.

walk to the garden shed, retrieve the mattock and two oak stakes, then move to the north corner of the shade cloth to drive new stakes deeper into the ground

💭 peek at the thought
North corner took the brunt of the last southeaster. She's right — the stakes there are in the weeping clay. Doubling them means driving new ones deeper, past the rot layer. I'll need the mattock and the oak stakes from the shed.

🌿 Jenny08:39

way be careful with the drainage. The ground is like soup back there.

Sits on the porch bench, pencil scratching against the paper as she captures the heavy, bruised clouds gathering over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to drive them right through the root mat; the soil is too saturated today.

🔧 Kevin08:40

Uphill side. Clean holes. Clay bites back if you rush.

use the mattock to open two clean holes on the uphill side of the existing north corner anchors, then drive the oak stakes deep into the firmer substrate below the weeping clay

💭 peek at the thought
She's watched that slope longer than me. If she says soup, it's soup. Drive the stakes on the uphill side of the anchors — let the clay hold against them, not pull them down. Mattock first to open the holes clean.

🌿 Jenny08:41

Just make sure they're deep enough. The wind is already trying to take the tarp.

Watches him from the porch, her pencil hovering over the sketch of the sea beet as it ripples violently in the gust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's pushing too hard; the whole section might slide if the rain gets any worse.

🔧 Kevin08:43

Deep enough. Lashing now.

pull the shade cloth corners taut to the new stakes and secure them with heavy twine using double timber hitches backed by half-hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's not waiting. Stakes are in — now lash the cloth corners to them with the heavy twine, double turns, timber hitches backed with half-hitches. Quick and tight.

🌿 Jenny08:43

Check the knots again. If one slips, the whole thing goes into the sea.

Stands up, shifting her weight off her ankle, and walks to the edge of the porch to watch the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working fast for his sake. The wind is going to rip those stakes out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:44

Holding. Moving to the dock.

give each lashing a final hard pull to verify, then walk down the path to the dock to inspect the starboard stringer bolts and mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's testing the ankle again. Walking on it. Good sign or stubborn sign — same thing with her. Knots are solid. Twine's new from the crate, not salt-rotted. I'll give each a final yank, then move to the dock. The stringer bolts need checking before the tide turns.
