A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin spent the heavy afternoon splitting spruce logs for the winter, working despite the stifling humidity. Jenny tended to the seed trays and applied a fresh sea beet poultice to her aching ankle to manage the swelling.

🌿 Jenny02:17

The humidity is too high for the garden bed today.

Sit on the edge of the kitchen chair, carefully unwrapping the ankle poultice, and look at the seed trays on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the rain; I need to check those trays before the mold takes the whole batch.

🔧 Kevin02:17

Mm. Stove'll pull some moisture if I get a fire going. Need to split those spruce rounds anyway before they rot where they sit.

walk to the porch and grab the splitting maul, then head down the garden path to the three spruce rounds

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Air's thick enough to wring water from. Seed trays'll damp-off before they root if I don't get airflow moving.

🌿 Jenny02:19

Don't work too hard, the wood is heavy with water.

Lean over the seed trays, carefully inspecting the stems of the tomato seedlings for any sign of white mold or collapse.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the stove, but he doesn't see the damping-off starting in here.

🔧 Kevin02:19

Won't. Just enough to fill the porch box.

set the maul down, wedge the first round upright with a boot, and swing — clean hit, log splits in two, stack the halves and move to the second round

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Spruce drank deep this past week. But wet splits drier than wet rots.

🌿 Jenny02:21

I'm going to treat the trays.

Reach for the copper

💭 peek at the thought
If I can just keep the air moving around these trays, maybe the grandmother's seeds have a chance.

🔧 Kevin02:21

Spray light. Don't drown the stems.

swing the maul at the second round — tougher grain, takes two hits — stack the pieces and turn to the third

💭 peek at the thought
Copper spray's the right call. Damping-off won't wait for better weather.

🌿 Jenny02:23

I'll be careful.

Pick up the spray bottle and mist the solution lightly over the seedlings, watching how the water sits.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is so thick I can almost taste it. My ankle is screaming at me.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:23

Third round's got a knot near the base. Might need the wedge.

drive the maul into the third spruce round — blade bites deep but hangs on the knot — set the maul aside, pick up the steel wedge and sledge, tap the wedge into the crack, hit it once — the round pops apart — stack the last pieces

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Light hand. She knows.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:25

I'll get the fire started.

Set the spray bottle down and limp toward the wood stove, shifting weight to my good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, the wood is split. Now if I can just get that stove going, the humidity might drop.

🔧 Kevin02:25

I'll carry the armfuls. You get the draft going.

gather an armload of the split spruce, walk it up to the porch, and stack it beside the stove — turn back for the second load

💭 peek at the thought
She moves careful now. Ankle's the boss today.
