The Rain Breaks

The sky finally opens into a heavy downpour that lashes the island. Kevin and Jenny are under the porch to watch the runoff water.

The humidity is oppressive as the sky thickens, making the air heavy and still. Kevin checks the Yanmar's injectors but finds the vibration remains consistent despite the heat. Jenny attempts to manage her swelling, but the throbbing makes even movement difficult and painful.

The tank's filling fast enough. Look at the runoff.

Lean back against the stone wall and sketch the way the water carves channels in the dirt.

💭 peek at the thought
If this doesn't stop, the garden beds will be soup before I can even start the trays.

Tank's at 392 now. That's forty litres already.

Check rain gauge reading on shelf, then trace finger along the stone wall where water's carving new channels.

💭 peek at the thought
The spring's running higher already - three days of steady rain and it's still coming. Good. Need that water before the boat comes.

It's too much. The garden won't hold it.

Wince as I shift my weight, pressing the swollen ankle against the cool stone floor.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty litres in an hour and the soil is going to be anaerobic by morning.

The intercept trench took the first surge. But the weep points below the third cairn are running hard.

Walk to the garden wall, pull the tarp edge up to check the drainage trench outflow, then crouch to examine the soil where water's pooling.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The beds above the trench are already saturated. If the clay gives way again we lose the whole north slope planting.

The pH won't even matter if the roots rot in the silt.

💭 peek at the thought
If those weep points fail, the whole south slope is going to slide under us.

The shoring at the northeast corner held last storm. But the new weep at the fourth cairn wasn't there Tuesday.

Walk the trench line to the fourth cairn, probe the clay with the mattock handle, check if the cedar stakes are still seated.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the failure points same as I would. The silt's already choking the lettuce beds near the wall. If the trench overtops at high tide tonight...

🌿 Jenny05:15

It's digging its own paths. We need to clear the blockage before the tank overflows.

Grab the notebook and limp toward the porch, the throb in my ankle marking every step.

💭 peek at the thought
The island is moving faster than I can catalog it.

I'll take the mattock. You sketch from the porch.

Grab the mattock from the wall hook, walk to the tank's overflow channel, start clearing the silt and root mass blocking the outlet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving toward the overflow channel at the tank base. If that clogs the water backs up under the cottage floor - saw it happen in '19. The ankle's slowing her bad.
