← Day 841

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday Stagnation

Kevin is at the dock checking lines while Jenny remains in the garden shade.

Kevin finishes the preparation of the new spring line, waiting for the tide to recede so he can reach the north piling. Jenny remains in the garden, overwhelmed by the throbbing pain in her ankle and unable to focus on her botanical sketches of the sea beet. The air is heavy and still, smelling of a coming rain that has yet to arrive.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You inspect the ropes for fraying, ensuring the supply boat has a clear berth in three days.

🔧 Kevin09:12

Kevin — walk the dock end to end, inspecting each mooring line, chafe guard, and shackle; test the dinghy bow and stern springs by hand; check the mooring ring mortise where the oak wedges hold

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's thick enough to chew. Three days until the supply boat — if it comes — and these lines have taken every storm since January. Better check them now while the tide's high and I can see the chafing points.

🔧 Kevin09:16

Kevin — coil a length of the new half-inch three-strand from the crate; cut a replacement spring line for the north piling; splice an eye with a thimble and serve it; swap it out at low tide when I can reach the piling base

💭 peek at the thought
Lines are holding. Chafe guards on the bow and stern springs are good — served with sail twine last week and no new wear. The mooring ring's solid in its mortise, oak wedges tight. Only thing: the old spring line on the north piling shows salt rot at the eye. Not critical yet, but it'll go in the next blow. Should swap it before the boat ties up.

🔧 Kevin09:21

Kevin — walk the new spring line down to the north piling; wait for the tide to expose the base; untie the salt-rotted line and replace it with the new one; cinch the bowline round the piling and lead it back to the cleat on the dock stringer

💭 peek at the thought
Splice is clean. Thimble seated, serving tight. The new line's dry and takes the load clean. Tide's turning — water's dropping fast now. Good window to get at the piling base and swap the old spring before dark.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You lean back against the stone wall, feeling the stagnant heat press against your skin.

🌿 Jenny09:11

Jenny — close your eyes and trace the outline of the swelling on your ankle with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'll be out of antibiotics before the infection clears.

🌿 Jenny09:15

Jenny — reach for your way and begin drawing the anatomy of a sea much leaf, focusing on the salt glands to drown out the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping; I can feel it in my joints before the clouds even break.

🌿 Jenny09:19

Jenny — stop the sketch and look at the tin of seeds on the shelf, counting how many are already lost.

💭 peek at the thought
I've spent eleven months waiting for the right moment, and the garden is literally rotting around me.
