The Calm Before the Storm

The tide continues to drop, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust on the cottage shutters.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny08:49

The rain's coming. Let me get the seed tin out before it gets worse.

walk to kitchen table and retrieve grandmother's seed tin from under the cast iron skillet

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's starting - good, I can finally start on those seeds properly now.

🔧 Kevin08:50

Take the tin. I'll double the bow line and check the generator fuel.

walk to porch and step out into the rain, heading for the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. The cane helps but the ankle's still hot — I felt it through the gauze when I changed it. Rain on the shutters means the barometer's still falling. Need to secure the dinghy lines before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny08:51

Thanks. I'll sort the seeds while you're out there.

place seed tin on kitchen table, open it carefully, and begin separating viable seeds from compromised packets using the three remaining water test strips as makeshift separators

💭 peek at the thought
He's gone - good, I have time to work without him hovering.

🔧 Kevin08:53

Be right back. Check the generator fuel level and double the stern lines.

walk back to cottage and check generator fuel gauge through window

💭 peek at the thought
Three test strips left — she's using them properly, not wasting them. The tin's heavy but she's handling it. Need to move fast on the dock; the barometer's probably below 980 now.

🌿 Jenny08:55

I've got the seeds. Focus on the lines.

carefully lay out the tomato and sea beet seeds on a dry piece of newspaper to inspect them for mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the mechanics while the life here is rotting in a tin.

🔧 Kevin08:55

Generator's half full. Heading to the dock now.

walk down the path to the dock, pulling hood up against the rain

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's at half tank. Good. The stern line I reinforced with the long splice held last storm — need to verify the chafe guard at the mooring ring and the new doubling on the north piling. Rain's coming down harder.

🌿 Jenny08:57

Be careful, the boards will be slick.

pick up the magnifying glass and begin inspecting the heirloom tomato seeds for any signs of damp rot.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, some silence to focus on the morphology instead of his constant pacing.

🔧 Kevin08:57

Kevin — step onto the dock, testing the first plank with weight before committing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the greenheart's slippery when wet. The south end planks Jenny marked with chalk are the worst. Need to check the mooring ring mortise first, then the doubled stern spring, then the bow line slack for swell. One thing at a time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:59

Watch the edge, the rot is deep there.

sort a small handful of sea beet seeds into a pile on the newspaper, checking for viability.

💭 peek at the thought
If he falls through, I'm not getting out there to save him.

🔧 Kevin08:59

Kevin — move along the dock toward the seaward end, boots finding the dry spots, checking the mooring ring mortise and the oak wedges

💭 peek at the thought
She's been over every inch of this dock. Knows the rot better than I do. The seaward end's the problem — the chalk marks on the three south planks. The mortise for the mooring ring is splintered but the oak wedges are holding. Six vertical grain wedges driven tight. Need to check the doubled stern spring at the north piling and the bow line lead at the chock.
