planting the heirloom rows

Kevin and Jenny walk down the path to the garden carrying the sorted seed packets and a hand trowel. The soil is damp from yesterday's humidity. Clouds stack low to the southwest. They kneel at the first prepared bed to plant tomato and pepper seeds.

Kevin completes the radio transmission and checks the generator fuel levels as the humidity sets in. Jenny finishes planting the heirloom tomato and pepper seeds in the garden while managing her persistent ankle pain.

🌿 Jenny09:55

The pressure is dropping fast. We need to get these in the ground before the wind shifts.

way digs a small trench in the soil with the trowel, carefully placing a tomato seed inside and pressing the earth down firmly with her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt air hits them before they sprout, they're lost, but I can't keep them in the tin forever.

Barometer was 983 when I checked the dock. Dropping steady. We've got maybe two hours before the wind turns hard southwest.

kneel beside the prepared bed and open the pepper seed packet, planting seeds at two-inch intervals along the second row, pressing each firm with thumb and forefinger

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's drop matches what I felt in my chest this morning. Southwest wind means salt spray will hit these beds within hours. The soil's good — damp but not sodden, holds shape when squeezed. Jenny's hands know this work. I'll plant the peppers beside her row, deeper than the tomatoes. They need the warmth lower down.

🌿 Jenny09:57

way move faster. I want the last of these in before the rain starts.

reaches into the packet for the remaining tomato seeds and begins pressing them into the soil, her fingers stained with dark, damp earth.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours isn't enough to finish the whole bed, but it's better than letting them rot.

🔧 Kevin09:57

Take the kale packet. I'll finish peppers and beans. You stay on tomatoes.

continue planting pepper seeds down the row, then open the bean packet and plant the next row over, moving methodically to cover ground while Jenny works the tomato line

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's swollen worse than yesterday. She's favouring the left leg, shifting weight off it every time she kneels. The red streaks haven't retreated — trimethoprim's not touching the lymphangitis. She won't stop until the seeds are in. I'll take the pepper row and the kale after, let her stay on tomatoes. Her hands are steady even if her leg isn't.

🌿 Jenny09:59

on it. just keep an eye on those clouds.

takes the kale seed packet from Kevin and begins poking small holes in the soil with her finger, placing the seeds in one by one.

💭 peek at the thought
he's right, the kale needs to go in. My ankle is throbbing with every movement.

🔧 Kevin09:59

(check barometer) 978 and falling. We need to get this bed finished before the wind hits twenty knots.

finish planting the kale seeds in the final prepared row, then move to the storm shelter area to stake the shade cloth before the rain starts

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are darkening fast, and I can still feel that tightness in my chest when I think about the sea too much. Jenny's working on autopilot, hands moving, body going through motions. She hasn't touched her ankle since I gave her the boots this morning. If she pushes too hard and that infection spreads... I need to check the barometer again. Make sure we're not trapped on this island when something happens.

🌿 Jenny10:01

I'm almost done. Just one more row.

presses the last of the tomato seeds into the soil, smoothing the earth down with her palm to secure them.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. I need to finish this last row or the seeds will blow away.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:01

Good. Pack the tin. I'll stake the shade cloth and check the dinghy lines. Meet you at the cottage.

walk to the shade cloth frame at the garden's windward edge and drive the remaining oak stakes deep, battening the cloth tight with timber strips before the wind tears it loose

💭 peek at the thought
She's done. The bed's finished. Her hands are caked in soil, shaking slightly — whether from the cold wind picking up or the fever, I can't tell. The rain's close enough to taste. Need to get the seed packets back in the tin, the tin in the dry bag, and her back to the cottage before the path turns to slurry. The storm anchor on the dinghy needs checking too. Two hours of light left if we're lucky.

🌿 Jenny10:03

way, I'll bring more stakes tomorrow.

stands up slowly, wincing as her ankle protests, and walks toward the cottage with the seed tin clutched in her hand.

💭 peek at the thought
I should have finished the whole bed. Now I have to come back out there tomorrow.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin10:03

(without looking up from driving the stake) Tomorrow you stay off it. I'll bring stakes.

drive the last oak stake home with the mallet, secure the final batten strip over the shade cloth edge, then walk toward the dock to check the dinghy storm anchor and doubled stern spring

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding the limp. Or trying to. The way she rolls her foot outward, shortens the stride — I've watched that walk for eleven months. Tomorrow she won't be bringing stakes. Tomorrow I'll be carrying her if this antibiotic doesn't turn the corner. The barometer's still dropping. Wind's shifting southwest, gusting now. Rain within the hour. I'll finish the stakes, check the dinghy, then get back to her. The generator needs another hour of run time to top the batteries before dark.
