The First Gust Breaks

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy rain lathers the roof. The wind begins to howl through the eaves.

The air is heavy and still, the flat sky darkening to a bruised purple as the clouds roll in. The barometer continues its steady drop to 976 hPa, signaling an approaching front. The tide is at its lowest ebb, exposing the slick, salt-crusted rocks of the tide pools and the pebbled sand near the dock.

🌿 Jenny10:33

Kevin, the rain's getting worse. I need help getting those tomato stakes in before the flood washes the seeds out.

Stand up slowly, wincing, and shuffle toward the garden door, pulling my notebook and the wrapped heirloom seeds from my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure dropped to 976 hPa and falling fast. Kevin's hands are steady on the radio, transmitting into static, while I sit here with boiling water and pain radiating from my ankle. I can hear the rain starting to hammer harder on the roof, and I need to get those seeds planted before the soil washes away.

Sit down. I'll do the stakes. You watch the ankle and the radio.

Pull on oilskin jacket, grab mallet and tomato stakes from porch corner, head out into the rain toward the garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast on that ankle. The streaks are at mid-thigh and she's acting like it's a sprain. If the garden floods, we lose the heirlooms. If she tears something in that leg, we lose her. I'll stake the tomatoes. She stays inside.

🌿 Jenny10:35

The soil is too saturated, Kevin! If we don't plant now, the runoff will take them!

way on the edge of the bed, watching him through the window while debriding my ankle with a bowl of warm saline.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always like that—thinking he can fix the world with a mallet. The soil is already turning to mush, and if my grandmother's seeds hit that water, they're gone for.

🔧 Kevin10:35

Soil's not too saturated for stakes. It's too saturated for you to be standing on it. Get back inside.

Drive the first stake hard beside the nearest tomato plant, twine ready in teeth, working down the row fast while the rain hammers down.

💭 peek at the thought
She's debriding her own ankle in a bowl of saline while telling me how to do my job. The infection's tracking toward her groin and she's worried about tomato seedlings. Priorities are backwards but I'm not arguing with her at the window in a squall.

🌿 Jenny10:37

I'm not sitting here while the garden washes away!

Push the door open and step out onto the porch, clutching the heirloom seed tin against my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. He doesn't see the way the water is pooling. If I don't get these seeds in the ground, the whole season is wasted.

🔧 Kevin10:37

Then plant from the porch steps. I'll bring the beds to you.

Finish the last two stakes fast, yank the twine tight, cut it with teeth, then turn and sprint back toward the cottage porch with the seed tin in mind — grab the tray of seeded pots from the garden edge and haul them up to the porch where s

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as a seized bolt. She'll fall and tear the wound open, or the streaks jump to sepsis while she's playing gardener. But she won't listen to reason — never has. The only way she stays put is if the work's already done.
