Preparing for the storm

The rain intensifies into a downpour as the wind picks up from the east.

Kevin and Jenny worked to secure the north ridge garden tarps as a heavy rain began to fall. Kevin struggled to stake the tarp down in the thickening mud, while Jenny managed the southern edge to prevent the fabric from lifting in the wind.

Jenny! The rain's coming down hard - we need to secure the garden tarp before the wind shifts east to west. The barometer's dropping faster than I thought.

Run to the garden and check if the shade cloth and seedling tarp are properly secured, then head back to the cottage to gather materials for the long-wire aerial.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling faster now, east wind backing west - I need to rig that long wire before the rain hits horizontal. Jenny's probably already checking the seedlings in the garden.

🌿 Jenny11:08

Check the stakes on the north side first!

grab the flashlight and the tin of seeds, then step out onto the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp rips, the seedlings are going to be stripped from the soil. I can't lose them now.

🔧 Kevin11:08

On it.

Head to the north ridge garden beds and check the tarp stakes and battens, especially the ones the coconut crab didn't already steal, then grab the spare wire and bamboo pole from the workshop for the aerial.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving - good. The north ridge tarp is the one that'll take the brunt when the wind backs west. I'll check those stakes and then get the aerial materials from the workshop.

🌿 Jenny11:09

Watch out for the mud, it's slick near the dock!

pull the porch door shut and watch the rain hit the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; the wind is going to catch the edge if he isn't careful.

🔧 Kevin11:10

Taking the upper path.

Walk up the slope past the cottage to the north ridge garden beds, checking the tarp battens and stakes along the windward edge, then continue to the workshop for the spare wire and bamboo pole.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the mud - the clay gets treacherous when it's this wet. I'll take the upper path to the north ridge, check the tarp, then get the aerial gear.

🌿 Jenny11:11

I've got the radio if you need a hand!

grab the flashlight and the seed tin, then head toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning. If that tarp catches a full gust, my grandmother's seeds are gone in the mud.

🔧 Kevin11:12

Right. Shout if the wind shifts.

Continue up to the north ridge garden beds and inspect the tarp battens and stakes, reinforcing any that have worked loose in the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the radio and the seed tin to the garden - smart, keeps both dry and lets her monitor while she checks the seedlings. I'll secure the north ridge tarp first, then build the aerial.

🌿 Jenny11:13

I'm checking the seaward wall now!

movement through the tall grass toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is making my ankle scream. If the tarp fails, the whole garden is washed out.

🔧 Kevin11:14

(nothing - too far to shout over the rain)

Check each tarp batten and stake along the north ridge beds, driving loose stakes deeper and adding timber strips where the wind has lifted corners.

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the seaward garden wall checking drainage. Good - that wall's held through worse but the clay behind it gets slippery. I'm at the north ridge beds now, need to check these tarp stakes before the wind backs west.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:15

Is the weight down on the corner?

crouch by the garden wall, checking the tension on the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is fighting the tarp. If those stakes pull, the soil will be stripped bare.

🔧 Kevin11:16

North ridge tarp's separate. I'm staking this one now.

Drive the last loose stake at the north ridge bed corner, add a cribbing stone for weight, then head back down to the workshop for the spare wire and bamboo pole.

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the seaward wall checking the tarp corner weight. I'm up at the north ridge beds - different tarp. Need to finish these stakes and get back to the aerial.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:17

Check the south edge! It's lifting!

press a heavy stone onto the corner of the tarp, watching the fabric catch the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the north ridge is its own beast. If this one goes, the heirloom seedlings are buried.
