← Day 856

the keeper's cottage · day 856 · afternoon

The storm breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as Kevin and Jenny retreat inside to secure the gear for the night.

The humidity is a physical weight, clinging to the skin as the air grows still and heavy. Kevin has secured the shutters with heavy stainless bolts, but the dampness still seeps through the seams of the cottage. Jenny sits on the steps, her ankle throbbing in the heat, as she watches the high tide creep toward the dockings.

Shutters first. Then the aerial. You sit.

walk to the porch and begin securing the east shutter with the 150mm through-bolt

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Pressure's 987 and still falling — this'll blow harder before morning. Need to get the shutters dogged down, radio aerial tied off, and the generator shed battened before the wind shifts southwest. Jenny's ankle won't take another day on the slope if the trench fails.

🌿 Jenny07:53

The soil is already weeping, Kevin.

sit on the porch steps, propping my swollen ankle on a crate, and watch the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
If that pressure drops another five hPa, the whole north ridge is going to slide into the sea and he's just looking at a bolt while the earth is melting.

🔧 Kevin07:53

Trench bought us time. Not forever.

drive the 150mm stainless through-bolt home with the mallet, securing the east shutter, then move to the west shutter

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Saw it myself this morning — new weeping at the two soil pockets below the garden expansion. Clay's saturated to the slip plane. If the intercept trench doesn't hold tonight, the whole north wall goes. But she doesn't need me telling her what she already knows.

🌿 Jenny07:55

Time doesn't matter if the seeds go to rot.

sketch the new fracture lines on the north ridge in my notebook, hand shaking slightly from the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
Time is the one thing I'm running out of, and the island is counting every second down.

🔧 Kevin07:57

Tin E's on the hearth. Seeds are dry. Tin's sealed.

finish dogging the west shutter, then climb the porch ladder to the roof to check the tarp battening on the west ridge

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds are the one thing she'll fight for. Not the cottage, not the dock, not even the engine. Those tins on the stove hearth — she'd run back into a burning building for them. Her hand's shaking. Pain or cold, hard to tell. Probably both.

🌿 Jenny07:57

The garden is still half weeds and the rain is coming.

rub the heat of my swollen own and watch the grey sky swallow the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the tin is the world, but the soil is what's actually failing us.

🔧 Kevin07:58

The beds that count are covered. Weeds hold the rest.

check the tarp battens on the west ridge, tightening the timber strips where wind has worked them loose

💭 peek at the thought
Half weeds because I talked more than I built. She's not wrong. But the beds that matter — heirloom tomatoes, sea beet, the limed rows — they're planted. Mulched. Tarp's battened. The rest is ground cover holding slope. She knows that too. Just hurting.

🌿 Jenny07:59

The amended soil holds moisture, Kevin. The seeds need that.

reach for my notebook and trace the soil pH map with my finger, the graphite leaving smudges from my damp palm.

💭 peek at the thought
The weeds are rotting in the mud while he tightens strips of wood over nothing.
