Preparing the shoring
Kevin and Jenny meet under the cottage eaves as he brings the greenheart plates and bolts, while the rain continues to drum on the roof and the water tank reaches its limit.
The humidity is a heavy weight over the cottage, and the flat sky is darkening into a bruised purple. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower steps of the dock. Jenny sits on the porch, her ankle throbbing in the pulse of the damp heat, while Kevin checks the barometer and notes the pressure is continuing its steady drop.
The tank is full. We can't take another drop of this today.
Lean against the stone wall, rubbing my swollen ankle while watching the garden drown.

Tide's still coming in. We wait.
lean the greenheart plates against the cottage wall under the eaves, out of the rain, then pull the porch door shut against the wind

Sit on the kitchen chair, staring at the tin of seeds on the table.

Seeds are dry in the tin. Beds can wait.
set the kettle on the wood stove, fill it from the tank tap, and strike a match for the kindling

It doesn't wait, Kevin. The ridge is already shifting.
Trace the rust on the seed tin with a fingernail, ignoring the pulse in my ankle.

Then we pump the tank down. Make room for what's coming. And we shore the ridge tomorrow at first light, low tide.
pull the manual pump from under the sink, connect the outflow hose, and start pumping tank water out onto the grass slope away from the foundation
