Preparing the shoring

Kevin and Jenny meet under the cottage eaves as he brings the greenheart plates and bolts, while the rain continues to drum on the roof and the water tank reaches its limit.

The humidity is a heavy weight over the cottage, and the flat sky is darkening into a bruised purple. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower steps of the dock. Jenny sits on the porch, her ankle throbbing in the pulse of the damp heat, while Kevin checks the barometer and notes the pressure is continuing its steady drop.

🌿 Jenny07:45

The tank is full. We can't take another drop of this today.

Lean against the stone wall, rubbing my swollen ankle while watching the garden drown.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if I don't get those seeds down now, the whole bed will just turn to soup.

🔧 Kevin07:46

Tide's still coming in. We wait.

lean the greenheart plates against the cottage wall under the eaves, out of the rain, then pull the porch door shut against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full and the ground's already soup. Greenheart won't hold in this muck anyway — need the water to drop before we can drive bolts. She's favouring the ankle hard. Should've made her stay on the porch.

way. The soil is going to be ruined by the time the sun comes.

Sit on the kitchen chair, staring at the tin of seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He always was so practical while the world was literally washing away under my feet.

🔧 Kevin07:48

Seeds are dry in the tin. Beds can wait.

set the kettle on the wood stove, fill it from the tank tap, and strike a match for the kindling

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Clay this saturated turns to soup — structure gone, air pockets drowned. The heirloom beds on the ridge will slump if we don't get drainage working. But there's nothing to do until the water drops.

🌿 Jenny07:49

It doesn't wait, Kevin. The ridge is already shifting.

Trace the rust on the seed tin with a fingernail, ignoring the pulse in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not just the water, it's the chemistry. The soil is already turning against them.

🔧 Kevin07:50

Then we pump the tank down. Make room for what's coming. And we shore the ridge tomorrow at first light, low tide.

pull the manual pump from under the sink, connect the outflow hose, and start pumping tank water out onto the grass slope away from the foundation

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the movement. Measured it. She doesn't say things she hasn't verified. The ridge is going and the tank's full and the only drainage we've got is a collapsed trench. We're out of options that don't involve getting wet and cold and possibly losing more ground.
