The Storm Deepens

The rain intensifies, and the tide begins to turn, narrowing the window of time to finish the trench before the garden is swept away.

Kevin and Jenny attempted to dig a drainage trench along the garden wall to divert rainwater runoff, but the soil was too saturated and heavy to hold a shape. The effort failed as the mud collapsed, forcing them to retreat to the cottage to retrieve greenheart plates for shoring instead.

Jenny — limps to the garden bed, grips the spade with her good hand, and starts digging into the mud to reinforce the trench.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wall breaches now, the charcoal layer is gone and the seeds go with it. I can't lose them now.

Put the spade down. I'll finish it.

Take the spade from her and dig the intercept trench along the garden wall, driving the blade deep to cut through the clay and redirect the water before the tide comes back up.

💭 peek at the thought
She's digging with a fever and a leg that won't hold. The trench needs doing but not by her, not now.

🌿 Jenny07:41

The soil is too soft.

Kneels in the muck and starts packing the loose earth against the wall with her bare hands to slow the runoff.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the way the water is pooling behind the stones. It's going to undercut.

Then we shore it. Greenheart plates are under the eaves. Help me carry them.

Walk back to the cottage, retrieve the two greenheart sister plates staged under the eaves, and bring them to the garden wall to drive in as deadman anchors behind the trench.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't stop. Not until she drops. The wall needs shoring, not just packing — but she's right here in the muck beside me and I can't make her leave.

🌿 Jenny07:43

I'm coming.

Grabs the edge of the heavy wood, wincing as the weight shifts onto her swollen ankle, and follows him toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If we can get those plates deep enough, the weight might hold just long enough for the rain to stop.

🔧 Kevin07:45

The plates need the 150mm bolts from the shed. I'll get them.

Head to the shed, retrieve the stainless through-bolts and washers, and meet her at the cottage with the hardware in hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She moves like she's still in the tide pools, barefoot through the mud, but I see the limpet-poultice bag still clutched in her hand. She's choosing to carry this.
