The Storm Breaks

The wind now howls through the radio mast as the rain turns into a horizontal gale. Kevin and Jenny are hunkered down, waiting for the supply boat and the weather to pass.

Kevin reinforced the kitchen window latch with a timber batten and slid newspaper under tin E on the stove shelf. Jenny reapplied a fresh sea beet and mint poultice to her ankle and began sketching the salt gland morphology while the barometer held steady at 989 hPa and rain rose to the third mullion.

🌿 Jenny16:05

Check the latches on the kitchen window again.

Wrap the blanket tighter around my own and watch the way needle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the roof leaks, the seeds are ruined before they even see dirt.

🔧 Kevin16:06

Already did. Frame's moved two mil. Gonna need the spare batten.

walk to the kitchen window, test the latch, find it loose, fetch the spare timber batten from under the eaves and screw it across the frame

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to worry the window — last nor'easter blew the latch clean out of the frame. I checked it an hour ago but the frame's shifted since.

🌿 Jenny16:07

Make sure it's tight. We can't lose the dry batch.

Move the tin of seeds closer to the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the frame is moving, the water will find a way through the salt.

🔧 Kevin16:08

Batten's holding. Three screws into sound timber. Not going anywhere.

drive the third screw home, wipe rain off the tin lid, and slide it farther back on the stove shelf where the heat's steadier

💭 peek at the thought
Tin E's bottom seam won't hold another soaking. If that window fails, we lose the heirlooms and the sea beet seed both.

🌿 Jenny16:09

Good. Keep an eye on the rain line against the glass.

Check the ankle dressing, reapply fresh poultice if the old one's saturated.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is holding but the tin is still vulnerable to any leak that gets past the window.

🔧 Kevin16:10

Line's at the third mullion. Rising fast.

glance at the window, then step to the back wall and press a palm against the cool stone where the northeast corner meets the floor, feeling for damp

💭 peek at the thought
Water's climbing the pane — three inches higher than ten minutes ago. Ground's saturated. If the foundation weeps, it'll come up through the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny16:11

Put some newspaper under the tin, just in case.

Open the notebook and sketch the sea beet morphology to ignore the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
If the stone is cold and wet, the humidity is getting through the mortar.

🔧 Kevin16:13

Done.

pull a sheet from the bundle on the counter, fold it double, slide it under tin E, then check the stove door seal while I'm there

💭 peek at the thought
Smart. Condensation on the shelf drips. Newspaper buys us time if the roof weeps too.

🌿 Jenny16:13

The barometer is screaming. It's going to be a long night.

Sharpen pencil and start drawing the salt glands on the beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
The stove is the only thing Keeping the air from turning to soup.
