the keeper's cottage · day 864 · morning

The first drops fall

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the first heavy raindrops hit the tin roof. The humidity inside the cottage rises as the barometer finally breaks.

Kevin lit the wood stove and wrapped the heirloom seed tin in newspaper to dry it near the heat, while Jenny tested soil pH in the garden and found acidic conditions near the cottage foundation. The barometer continued rising, easing immediate storm concerns.

Radio silent?

walk to the porch and check the barometer reading, then secure the dinghy bow line at the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's broken 980. Rain's here early. Foundation seal's a loss in this humidity — epoxy'll never cure. Need to secure the dinghy and shelter the seedlings before the wind picks up. Jenny's moving slow. Ankle's still bad.

Static. The air is too thick for the waves to carry anything.

Trace the falling needle on the barometer with a finger, then look back at the tin of seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the boat doesn't come in ten days, these seeds are just going to rot.

Tin needs to go high. Loft ladder.

grab the heirloom seed tin from the table and carry it up to the loft, wedging it between the rafters where water won't reach

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer like it's a patient. Needle's dropping faster now. Rain on the roof sounds heavy — not squall heavy, sustained heavy. Seed tin's open on the table. Heirlooms. If the cottage floods again, we lose them.

🌿 Jenny15:39

It's not water I'm worried about—it's that the loft's humidity's nearly as bad as the cottage.

Watch him wedge the tin, then walk to the north window where I can see the garden through the rain-streaked glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about the storm but not about planting. The seeds deserve soil, not shelter.

Stove it is. Dry the air first.

carry the seed tin back down and set it on the stove shelf, then bank the wood stove with the driest kindling and light it to drive moisture out of the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Loft's a sponge. Humidity'll rot the packets before water touches them. Need dry air — stove heat, or the generator shed if the carb holds. Garden's taking a beating through the glass. Shade cloth's flapping. Tomato stakes bending.

🌿 Jenny15:41

way don't let them touch the iron directly. I'll wrap the tin first.

Sit on the stool, warming my hands near the stove, and watch the smoke rise up the chimney.

💭 peek at the thought
If the heat gets too high, it'll kill the seeds before they<strong> get to the ground.

🔧 Kevin15:41

Newspaper in the crate bundle. Wrap it loose — air gap.

pull the bundle of old newspapers from the crate and hand it to her, then add another split of dry spruce to the stove and check the chimney draw

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Iron gets hot fast — could cook the seeds through the tin. Newspaper wrap from the supply crate bundle'll buffer it. Her hands look stiff at the knuckles. Ankle's swollen under the wrap. She shouldn't be sitting on a cold stool.

🌿 Jenny15:43

I need to check the soil pH first—whatever's left in the garden might be salvageable.

Wrap the heirloom tin in the newspaper bundle and set it beside the stove, then head toward the garden door with the water test kit.

💭 peek at the thought
The newspaper bundle is salt-saturated and torn in places, but it'll have to do.
