← Day 866

the keeper's cottage · day 866 · morning

The rain begins

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain drum against the roof.

The rain continues in heavy, warm sheets, soaking the island and making the cottage walls weep. The rot in the floor sills is revealed to be worse than feared, the wood honeycombed and soft where water seeps through the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny00:25

The rain is getting into the stone faster than I thought.

Lean back against the kitchen wall and wince as the weight shifts on my swollen, pulsing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is softening like wet paper, and if I don't tell him, the whole foundation will take us by winter.

Foundation's held worse. Mortar's lime-based — breathes when it dries.

pour coffee into two tin mugs, set one on the table near her hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle again. The poultice held through the night but the swelling hasn't gone down. She's watching the walls like she's reading a gauge.

🌿 Jenny00:27

It's not just the mortar, Kevin. The sills are honeycombed.

Take the mug with a shaking hand, eyes fixed on the sketch of the rot patterns in my lap.

💭 peek at the thought
It doesn't breathe, it rots. The salt is eating the joints.

🔧 Kevin00:29

Then we shore before dark. Greenheart stakes, same as the trench.

set mug down, reach for the notebook on the shelf, flip to the foundation sketches

💭 peek at the thought
The sills. She's right - I can see it now where the rain's coming in sideways at the corners. Three days and we're done for if this holds.

🌿 Jenny00:30

The humidity is too high for stakes today. The wood will just pull through.

Rub the swollen skin around my ankle, looking out at the rain-slicked garden.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even stand up straight, let alone drive stakes. My ankle is screaming.

🔧 Kevin00:30

Then we don't drive. We bolt.

pull the notebook closer, sketch quick bracket plates with 150mm through-bolts tying into the sound joists above the rot

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Greenheart's dense but it still needs bite in saturated clay. We'd be driving stakes into soup.

🌿 Jenny00:33

If we have the hardware. We'll need to bypass thetted sills entirely.

Lean forward to look at his drawing, ignoring the sharp throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Steel plates. It's the only way to stop the frame from giving way.

🔧 Kevin00:33

Rod stock in the workshop. 300mm stainless, die set. Two bolts if we're careful. Need to drill through sound timber above the rot line - that's oak frame, not the sills.

stand, pull oilskin from the hook, check the barometer on the way to the door

💭 peek at the thought
One 150mm stainless through-bolt left. Used the last on the dock plank yesterday. Spare's at the east shutter but it's 10mm, not 150mm. The 10mm rod stock is in the workshop drawer - 300mm length, thread die set there too. Could cut and thread two 150mm bolts from it if the die holds.
