The Heavy Stillness

The two of you meet in the kitchen as the sun fails to break the grey sky, the humidity rising with the morning heat.

Kevin wired a small 12V fan to a battery switch to improve airflow over the seedling trays. Jenny positioned the fan and monitored the humidity to combat the mold on the lettuce. The device successfully began circulating air despite the high cottage humidity.

🌿 Jenny10:09

The lettuce is turning fuzzy, Kevin. We need more airflow in here or they will all rot.

sit heavily on the kitchen chair, rubbing my throbbing ankle while I stare at the seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
If the mold takes the lettuce, the whole batch is gone, and I don't have the energy to start over.

Door and window. Cross-draft. I'll prop the porch door wide.

walk to the porch door and unhook the latch, swinging it wide open, then move to the kitchen window and crank it open fully

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the lettuce. The air's thick enough to drink. Need to get the porch door open and the window opposite — cross-draft before noon or we lose the whole tray.

🌿 Jenny10:11

It's better than nothing, but the humidity is still too high.

lean forward to carefully touch one of the moldy lettuce leaves with a clean fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
Maybe the breeze will help, but the air is just moving the dampness around now.

🔧 Kevin10:11

Rig a small fan. Radio battery, computer fan from the spares box. Push air over the trays direct.

walk to the radio shelf, pull the spare parts box down, and dig out the 12V computer fan and a length of twin-flex wire

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Cross-draft helps but it's just moving wet air around. The shade cloth over the garden's holding moisture too. Could run the generator, power the battery fan — but the motor's burnt. Could rig the old computer fan off the radio battery, push air across the trays. Small. Better than nothing.

🌿 Jenny10:13

Can you splice that to the radio battery? I need it running on 12V, not 5V.

walk slowly to the radio shelf and pull the battery pack down, then sit on the wooden stool by the window to examine the fan's specifications.

💭 peek at the thought
A fan might actually work if I can jury-rig it fast enough before the mold spreads.

🔧 Kevin10:13

It's a 12V fan. Pulled from a PSU, not USB. Straight splice to the radio battery — red to red, black to black. I'll put a switch inline so we kill it when we transmit.

strip the twin-flex ends, twist red to the fan's red lead and black to black, tape the joints, then wire in a small toggle switch from the spares box on the positive line

💭 peek at the thought
She knows her volts. The fan's 12V — pulled it from an old PC power supply unit years ago, not a USB one. Radio battery's 12V nominal. Straight splice, polarity right, it'll run. Just need to watch the battery draw; the radio's primary.

🌿 Jenny10:15

Make sure the connections are tight; I don't want a short circuit on the battery.

reach for my notebook and start a quick sketch of the mold pattern on the largest leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can get it running, maybe I can save the rest of the seedlings.

🔧 Kevin10:16

Soldered and taped. Switch on the positive. Battery's fused at the radio anyway — 3 amp. Fan draws 0.15. We're fine.

finish the solder joints, wrap each with self-amalgamating tape, mount the fan on the shelf edge above the seed trays with the toggle switch accessible, and flip it on

💭 peek at the thought
Connections tight, polarity right, switch inline. Battery's the radio's lifeline — no shorts. She's documenting the mold. Smart. Pattern tells you which cells to cull first.

🌿 Jenny10:17

Good. Now keep an eye on the humidity levels; this only works if it drops.

take a water test strip from the kit and dab it into the air near the seedlings to monitor relative humidity.

💭 peek at the thought
The fan hums, pushing dry air across the trays — a small hope against the rot.

🔧 Kevin10:17

Strips don't read air moisture. They're for dissolved solids. I'll check the porch window — condensation line tells you plenty.

walk to the porch and examine the window glass for condensation height, then glance at the barometer on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
The fan's running — faint whir, moving air across the trays. She's testing air humidity with a water strip. Won't read relative humidity, those are for dissolved solids in liquid. But she's methodical. Let her. I'll check the actual gauge on the porch if we have one, or just watch the condensation on the window glass.
