The Wind Shifting

The humidity thickens as the atmospheric pressure drops further. The first gust of the northeast wind rattles the unsecure shutters.

The night remained heavy with humidity as the air pressure continued its slow descent. Despite the calm, the cottage shutters were braced with greenheart plates, though the threat of a storm lingers in the overcast sky. Dawn breaks to a damp chill and the scent of salt and rotting earth.

Wind's shifting northeast. Shutters won't hold. Going to brace them with the greenheart plates.

Grab the greenheart sister plates from under the eaves and the 150mm stainless through-bolts from the east shutter, head to the porch to reinforce the shutter frames

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's turning. Shutters need securing now — those bolts won't hold in this soft timber. Need to sister the frames with the greenheart plates before the gusts hit proper.

Don't force them. Check the alignment before you torque.

Lean on the walking stick and limp toward the porch to watch him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally moving. But he's rushing—he'll strip the bolts if he doesn't align the plates perfectly first.

Checking alignment first.

Hold a plate against the east shutter frame, sight down the edge for twist, mark hole positions with pencil before drilling

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Bolt holes won't line up if the frame's twisted. Need to check each shutter's true before drilling.

🌿 Jenny10:48

Good. Make sure you're not too close to the edge.

Shift weight to the good leg and watch the pencil marks.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's using the pencil. If he misses the center of the grain, the whole thing will split under the first real gust.

🔧 Kevin10:48

Thirty mil from the edge. Marked it.

Drill pilot holes through the marked positions on the east shutter frame, then offer up the greenheart plate and bolt it through with the 150mm stainless through-bolt, washer, and nyloc nut

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching close. Good. Edge distance matters — too close and the greenheart splits under load. Need 30mm minimum from the edge on this soft timber.

🌿 Jenny10:51

Hand me that washer—let me check the thread engagement.

Grasp the washer and hold it against his work, watching the bolt thread.

💭 peek at the thought
Third one stripped already. If he does that to the east shutter, I'll have to replace the whole frame before the storm hits.

🔧 Kevin10:51

Two full turns on the nyloc before bite.

Hold the bolt steady while she checks the washer and thread engagement, then snug it down with the 19mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking my work. Thread engagement needs to be solid — at least 1.5 diameters in the plate. The nyloc should take two full turns before resistance.

🌿 Jenny10:53

That's tight. Don't over-torque it or you'll crack the greenheart.

Lean back against the porch post, rubbing my throbbing ankle while watching the darkening sky.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it right for once. But the humidity is making the wood feel like it's turning to mush.
