Morning Rain and Tide

The rain slackens slightly, but the air remains heavy with humidity. The tide has now covered the dock pilings, ending the chance to inspect the structural damage until the next ebb.

The morning rain continued in a steady, warm drizzle, keeping the air heavy and the cottage damp. Kevin spent the time preparing the poultice for Jenny's ankle and checking the water levels, while Jenny remained elevated, managing the pain and watching the tide rise. The high tide prevented any boat-work or dock-side repairs, focusing the day on indoor tasks and waiting for the weather.

🌿 Jenny13:01

The tide's coming in fast. We have to wait until morning.

Plates the limpets onto a bowl and winces as she shifts her weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get that beam sistered, the whole dock will pull away in the next surge.

Eat first. Broth's still hot.

set the tin mug of limpet broth on the table beside the bowl, pull out the chair for her

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg hard. The swelling's past the calf now, heat radiating through the gauze. Antibiotics need time but the streak's moving faster than I like. If it hits the lymph nodes by morning we're past what the kit can handle.

🌿 Jenny13:03

I'm not even hungry.

Sits down with a sigh, keeping her ankle elevated on the chair rung.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so helpful when the world is literally rotting outside.

🔧 Kevin13:04

Wasn't asking.

slide the bowl of limpets closer to her hand, settle into the opposite chair with my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
She hasn't kept proper food down in two days. The doxycycline tears up an empty stomach. Broth first, then the rest.

🌿 Jenny13:05

fine.

Picks up a fork and picks at a limet, staring at the steam.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the broth smells better than the salt air.

🔧 Kevin13:06

Kevin — sip coffee, keep eyes on her plate without staring

💭 peek at the thought
Good. One down. The broth'll settle the gut for the next dose. Watch her swallow.

🌿 Jenny13:07

My ankle's throbbing again.

Takes a small, reluctant bite of the limet, wincing at the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is heavier than the rain.

🔧 Kevin13:08

Finish the broth. I'll redo the poultice after.

stand, move to the stove to reheat the basin and fetch fresh sea beet and mint

💭 peek at the thought
The throb means pressure building. Could be the abscess trying to find a path, could be the bone. Either way the poultice needs changing and I need to check the streak line again. Pen mark's faded from sweat.

🌿 Jenny13:09

It's getting cold.

Takes a slow sip of broth, watching the rain artwork down the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a poultice fixes three months of neglect.

🔧 Kevin13:10

Body's fighting. Good sign.

mix the poultice — sea beet, mint, honey, a splash of the warm broth — spread it thick on clean gauze

💭 peek at the thought
The cold's in her bones, not the air. Fever. She's burning through what little reserve she has.
