Waiting for the Ebb Tide

The tide continues to fall, revealing the slick barnacles on the pilings as the wind shifts from the north.

The rain tapers to a humid drizzle, leaving the air heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. The tide has receded, exposing the jagged, rotting wood of the dock beam that Kevin marked with chalk. Jenny remains on the porch, her ankle throbbing in time with the pulse as she watches the horizon.

🔧 Kevin11:07

Kevin — walk the dock end to end, checking each cleat and mooring line for chafe, then stand at the seaward end with binoculars scanning for the supply boat's masthead.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping fast. Wind backing north — that's the shift that brings the chop. Need the boat in and out before the swell builds past the jetty. Should check the cleats one more time and make sure the crane hook has clear approach.

🌿 Jenny11:07

The wind's shifting, Kevin. Watch the swell.

Shift weight to my good leg and wince as the throbbing spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't show, I'm just going to let the rot take the whole lot.

🔧 Kevin11:08

Seen it. Running a second spring. You stay off that ankle.

Grab the spare warp from the locker, lead it from the dinghy's midships cleat around the north piling and back, take up the slack and cleat it hard.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The swell's already building on the outside — long lines stacking up on the reef. If the boat comes in heavy, the dinghy takes a beating alongside. Should run a second spring from the midships cleat to the north piling.

🌿 Jenny11:08

I'm staying. Just don't trip over the rotten planks.

Lean back against the porch railing and slowly massage the calf muscle above the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bit of rope is the only thing keeping us from drifting away. He has no idea how thin the rest of it is.

🔧 Kevin11:11

Marked the rot lines so you won't step on them.

Walk to the third dock plank from seaward end, use the chalk line to mark the full extent of the rot on the remaining sound wood, then trace a clear boundary line with the spare chalk stick.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to stay. If I'm needed for the medevac, she's my best chance of getting help. But those planks... three marked for replacement, one's already got the chalk line.

🌿 Jenny11:11

Thanks. I'll be sure to admire your art from the porch.

Let out a sharp, dry laugh and watch him through narrowed eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's marking boundaries. As if a piece of chalk can stop the wood from turning to sponge.

🔧 Kevin11:12

Art's on the supply boat manifest. You're the critic.

Toss the chalk back in the tool bucket, then lean against the seaward piling, binoculars raised, scanning the horizon where the swell lines meet the sky.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Good. Means she's alert. The laugh tells me the antibiotics are holding the fever down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:12

I'm not a critic, Kevin. I'm a botanist. There's a difference.

Reach for the canteen and take a small, cautious sip of water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the horizon he can't see the island falling apart beneath his boots.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:14

Difference is you write it down. I just fix it.

Lower the binoculars, wipe the lenses on my sleeve, then raise them again — the horizon's empty but the barometer's still rising, slow and steady.

💭 peek at the thought
Botanist. Right. She catalogues what lives and dies in salt wind. I just keep the engines turning.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:15

You can't fix what's already eaten through.

Look down at my swollen ankle, the pulse thrumming against the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the world can be fixed with a wrench and some epoxy. The rot goes deeper than wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:16

The rot stops where the greenheart starts. Same with infection.

Glance at her ankle, then back to the horizon, binoculars steady.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock planks. She's talking about the red line I marked on her skin this morning — the one that hasn't moved in six hours. The poultice is working. The antibiotics are working. She knows it too, but she won't say it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:16

I am not a piece of timber, Kevin.

Pull the blanket tighter around my shoulders and look away toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be comforting. It's infuriating. He's talking about my flesh like it's a dock piling.
