Evening meal

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the sun begins to dip. The smell of the wood stove fills the air.

Kevin inspected the radio housing for moisture ingress while the rain continued to taper off over the island. Jenny checked the heirloom seeds in the tin, noting the persistent dampness slowing the drying process.

pick up the roll of self-amalgamating tape from the porch shelf and wrap the housing crack tight, overlapping each turn, pressing it into the boss fracture to brace it

She's right. The crack's eaten into the mounting boss now — vibration from the next transmit will finish it. I should've patched it with epoxy and tape when I had the chance this afternoon, but the humidity kept the epoxy tacky. Radio's the only link to the supply boat schedule, to Tom, to anything.

She's methodical. Seeds first, always seeds. The tin's been dry since I moved it to the stove shelf — she knows that, still checks. Can't fault it. The radio tape job's ugly but it'll hold the boss together for a few transmissions if the wind doesn't scream. Need to get the dinghy sail bent on tomorrow. Mast step's still breathing but the doubler plate and through-bolts are solid. If the Yanmar holds at idle with the filed needle, we've got a way off.

She's right about the seeds. Some of those packets are three, four seasons old. Tomato, pepper, basil — if the mold took hold at the edges, the viability drops fast. She caught the compromised ones early, set them aside. Smart. The skillet's heating. Smell of corned beef fat will cut the damp air. Haven't eaten proper since the limpets at noon. Hands still smell of epoxy and salt.
