The Heat and the Humidity

Kevin and Jenny stand over the seed potato crate as the sun beats down on the dry soil. Jenny checks the moisture in the heirloom seedling trays while Kevin inspects the new mortar on the garden wall.

Kevin successfully carves the trenches into the garden soil, ensuring the depth is perfect for the seed potato planting. Jenny attempts to water the heirloom trays, but her clumsiness causes her to spill a significant amount of water, displacing the soil and risking the delicate seedlings.

🔧 Kevin21:04

Soil's too dry. Need to water the trenches before the seed goes in. You want the hoe or the can?

walk to the water tank and fill two galvanized cans

💭 thought
The mortar's holding. Jenny's quiet, but she's working. That's something. The soil's dry — potatoes want damp, not dust. We plant now or we lose the window.
🌿 Jenny21:05

The can. We don't drown the seedlings, just Kevin.

Take the can and begin a slow watering of the heirloom trays.

💭 thought
He thinks it's about the water, but I'm thinking about the roots dying in the heat.
🔧 Kevin21:06

Right. Trenches.

take the hoe and cut two straight drills thirty centimetres deep along the marked grid lines

💭 thought
She's watching the water more than the plants. The joke landed flat — she didn't smile. Soil drinks it fast in this heat. Trenches first, then the seed.
🌿 Jenny21:06

Watch the depth, you'll slice the roots if you go deeper.

Kneel by the edge of the trench and Test the soil with a finger.

💭 thought
He's digging like he's building a foundation, but these plants just need to breathe.
🔧 Kevin21:08

Got it.

pull the hoe back and recut the drills to fifteen centimetres, letting the blade skim just deep enough

💭 thought
She's right. The old roots run shallow here. Ease off.
🌿 Jenny21:09

Good. Now let the water sink in before it runs off.

Pour the water slowly into the first trench, watching for pooling.

💭 thought
That's better, but the soil is still too loose to hold.

Mending the garden mess

The sun climbs higher as the tide begins to lap the garden wall. Jenny works to salvage the flooded seedlings while Kevin prepares the seed potatoes.

Kevin planted seed potatoes in the garden trenches while Jenny checked seedling trays and moved them toward the cottage wall for shade. Kevin selected chitted tubers and set them gently in the soil, covering them shallowly. Jenny adjusted the trays to protect seedlings from incoming salt spray.

🔧 Kevin21:10

Trenches are cut. Spuds go in chits up, twelve inches apart, rows eighteen. Cover shallow — two inches max in this heat. I'll mulch after with the seaweed stack.

walk to the seed potato crate, lift the lid, and start selecting the best chitted tubers for planting

💭 thought
The heat's climbing faster than I expected. Soil'll bake hard by noon if I don't get these in and covered. Jenny's got the seedlings — she knows what she's doing, even if she won't say it.
🌿 Jenny21:11

Don't over-mulch. They'll suffocate in this humidity.

Use a small spoon to carefully press the silt back around the base of a drooping tomato seedling, steadying the plastic tray.

💭 thought
He thinks depth and seaweed will solve the salt spray, but the roots will rot before the heat even lets up.
🔧 Kevin21:12

Thin layer. Kept off the stems.

carry the first armload of seed potatoes to the garden and begin setting them in the trenches, chits facing up

💭 thought
She's right. Seen it before — wet mulch turns to slime, stems rot at the crown. Thin layer, kept back from the haulms.
🌿 Jenny21:13

Just make sure you aren't bruising the chits.

Wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a dirty hand and check the moisture in the seedling trays.

💭 thought
Two inches is barely enough if the soil stays this acidic, but he's not listening today.
🔧 Kevin21:14

Not my first crate.

set each tuber gently into the trench bottom, pressing soil around the base without touching the sprouts, moving methodical down the row

💭 thought
Chits are brittle this long. Handle them like eggs. She's watching — not the potatoes, me. Always has.
🌿 Jenny21:14

The wind is shifting. Keep eyes on the spray.

Stand up and stretch my back, looking out toward the north ridge where the succulents should be.

💭 thought
He's so confident in the dirt, but the salt is just waiting to eat it.
🔧 Kevin21:16

On it. You want the trays shifted now or after the spuds are buried?

finish the row I'm on, then stand and scan the garden wall line where the spray will come over

💭 thought
Wind's gone round to the northeast. Salt spray'll ride over the wall by midday if it freshens. Seedlings on the shed's north side — they'll take the hit. Should move them behind the cottage before the tide turns.
🌿 Jenny21:17

Move them now. The salt is coming faster than your mulch.

Lift the heaviest seedling tray and carry it toward the shade of the cottage wall.

💭 thought
If I move them now, I might save the heirloom tomatoes before the tide hits the peak.

Shelter and Signal

Kevin is at the dock working on the dinghy's primer bulb and jury-rigged aerial; Jenny is on the hilltop searching for succulents along the north ridge.

Kevin completes the fuel line repair with the new primer bulb and climbs the mast stump to secure the wire aerial toward the radio shack. Jenny remains on the hilltop, documenting salt-tolerant succulents found in the basalt cracks as the sky thickens with the coming rain.

🔧 Kevin21:20

Kevin — remove the old primer bulb from the fuel line using side cutters, then splice in the new bulb from the spare kit, securing both ends with hose clamps. Test the bulb for firmness and check for leaks.

💭 thought
The rubber's gone hard and brittle — splits right at the hose barb every time. Good thing I kept the spare kit dry. Two minutes with the side cutters and it'll be done.
🌿 Jenny21:22

Jenny — kneels by a crack in the basalt, brushing away loose grit to reveal a cluster of grey, waxy leaves.

💭 thought
If the clouds drop any lower I'll be blind before I reach the summit. I need to find something that breathes.
🔧 Kevin21:24

Kevin — coil the fuel line neat, stow the spare kit. Walk to the lightning rod base at the cottage corner, assess the mast stump and guy points for a wire aerial run.

💭 thought
Primer bulb's firm. No weep at the clamps. Engine should pull fuel clean now. Next job's the aerial — lightning rod base is sound, just need to run wire up and insulate it proper.
🌿 Jenny21:26

Jenny — pulls the notebook from her waist pocket and begins a rapid sketch of the leaf margins.

💭 thought
Thick cuticle, enough to actually hold the water. It's still here. It's stubborn.
🔧 Kevin21:28

Kevin — climb the mast stump, thread the new half-inch rope through the sound insulator bracket and down the guy wire path. Secure the rope at the base, then run insulated wire from the bracket to the radio shack entry, taping joints with self-amal

💭 thought
Lightning rod's copper strip still solid into ground. Mast stump's got the old insulator brackets — one shattered, one holding. Can run 30 feet of the new rope up the guys, splice a wire through the sound insulator, drop the feed to the radio. Ugly but it'll hear.
🌿 Jenny21:31

Jenny — holds a magnifying glass close to the plant, documenting the crystalline structure of the salt deposits.

💭 thought
The salt glands are dense here. It's not just surviving; it's processing the brine.

The First Drops of the Monsoon

The tide continues to fall as the first heavy drops of the wet season rain hit the dry dust.

Kevin and Jenny worked on the seed potato planting during the warm rain. Kevin successfully finished the first row by mulching the trenches with straw, while Jenny struggled with the mud while moving the delicate seedling trays to the shed.

🌿 Jenny21:33

Jenny — closes her notebook, tucks it into her bag, and begins the steep descent back toward the cottage.

💭 thought
If I don't find those succulents now, the whole trip was a waste of calories. My stomach is cramping and the trail is turning slick.
🔧 Kevin21:33

Kevin — walk up to the garden

💭 thought
She's heading back. Good. The rain's starting proper now — heavy drops on dry dust means slick clay on the path. I should check the potato trenches are covered before the soil turns to soup, then get the radio wire tensioned while there's still light.
🌿 Jenny21:34

Watch out for the rows!

Stops mid-step on the slope, watching him through the grey rain, heart wiring against her way.

💭 thought
He's right by the trenches. If he steps on those tubers, the season is ruined.
🔧 Kevin21:35

I know the rows. Going to cover the potatoes first, then move the trays.

walk up to the garden

💭 thought
She's worried about the seedlings. The rows are marked — I know where they are. Rain's coming down harder now. Need to get the potato trenches covered and the seed trays under shelter before everything washes out.
🌿 Jenny21:36

Don't pack them too hard. They need to breathe.

Steps down the last few meters of the ridge, watching his hands in the mud.

💭 thought
At least he's prioritizing the tubers, but the soil is already too soft from the rain.
🔧 Kevin21:36

Light cover. Straw on top.

cover the potato trenches with loose soil and lay straw mulch

💭 thought
She's right — compacted clay seals off air and rots tubers. Light cover, loose straw mulch on top. The trenches are already cut; just need to pull soil back over and lay the straw thin. Rain's steady now. Move.
🌿 Jenny21:38

Make sure the straw is tucked down so the wind doesn't Take it.

Walks over to the seedling trays, checking the moisture in the soil with a finger.

💭 thought
Good. The straw will keep the rain from washing the seeds away before they settle.
🔧 Kevin21:38

Tucking the straw under the edge. Helping you with the trays now.

tuck straw mulch under soil lip at trench ends, then walk to seedling trays

💭 thought
Wind off the cliff will lift loose straw if it's not anchored. Need to tuck the ends under the soil lip or weigh with small stones. She's checking the trays — good. I'll finish the mulch tuck, then help her move the trays to the lee of the shed before the rain pounds them flat.
🌿 Jenny21:40

Careful with the edges. They're still fragile.

Reaches out to steady a tray, her fingers brushing the damp earth near the surface.

💭 thought
He's actually helping for once. My hands are shaking, and the rain is starting to get through.
🔧 Kevin21:41

Got the ends. Slow to the shed.

lift tray ends carefully and carry seedling trays to lee of shed

💭 thought
She's careful with them. Good. The tomato and pepper stems are hair-thin still — one hard raindrop or rough move snaps them. I'll take the tray ends, keep them level. Shed's lee side is best: roof overhang, wall blocks the southwest gusts. Rain's cold now. Hands going numb.
🌿 Jenny21:42

Watch your step, the mud is turning.

Follows him toward the shed, shielding her notebook with her body as the rain picks up.

💭 thought
If he drops those, I'm going to scream. I'm too hungry to think straight.
🔧 Kevin21:43

Short steps. Not far.

walk carefully to shed with seedling trays, avoiding sliding in mud

💭 thought
The garden path's becoming slick clay — each step risks a slide. Short steps, knees bent, weight forward. Her notebook's open in her hands; she's using her body as a shield. Not many words between us now — just the rain and the mud and the need to get these trays under cover before they drown.
