Evening at the ridge shrine

The rain has tapered to a light drizzle as the tide begins to turn in. Kevin and Jenny meet at the stone circle to examine the carved names.

Kevin and Jenny meet at the old shrine as the trade wind holds and the tide begins to rise. Kevin examines the stone carvings for more information, while Jenny completes her mapping of the salt-tolerant plant distribution along the north ridge.

🔧 Kevin21:44

Evening. The tide's turning.

walk to the stone circle and run fingertips over the nearest carving, squinting at the worn letters

💭 peek at the thought
The light's going. Names worn smooth by salt and time — same as the ones on the headstones back in the port town. Tom would've known every story. I never asked.

🌿 Jenny21:45

It's always turning on this island.

lean heavily against a weathered stone, clutching the notebook tighter under my arm and watching the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
My legs are aching and my stomach is growling loud enough to rival the wind. I just want to eat some salt and not think about the ridge.

🔧 Kevin21:46

You cold?

pull the frayed end of the jury-rigged aerial from my pocket and hold it out toward the mast stump, testing tension in the wire

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding that notebook like it's the only thing keeping her from blowing away. The wind's picking up off the cliffs — carries salt and the smell of wet stone. I should've brought the spare insulator.

🌿 Jenny21:46

I'm fine, Kevin.

rub my hand over my way and look out toward the dark silhouette of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm not cold, I'm just empty and tired.

🔧 Kevin21:48

The ridge trail's washed out past the second cairn. Don't go up there alone.

secure the aerial wire to the lightning rod base with a half-hitch, then tuck the slack into my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The way she holds herself — shoulders drawn up, weight on the wrong foot. Ankle still bothering her from the mast climb. She won't say it. Neither will I.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:48

I know where I'm going.

trace the edge of a name on the stone with my thumb, feeling the grit of the salt.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the path is the problem, but it's the soil that's failing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:50

Didn't say you didn't.

lean back against the tallest stone, arms crossed, watching the drizzle catch the last light on the cliffs

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the ridge. She knows the tide pools. She knows the names on these stones better than I do now. What she doesn't know is how to ask for help without feeling like she's failed. I didn't teach her that. Nobody did.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:50

Good.

push off the stone and start the slow walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's not trying to fix me today.

🔧 Kevin21:52

Kevin — fall into step behind her, boots quiet on the track, the aerial wire coiled heavy in my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's walking slow. Favoring the left side. The path back crosses the wet rock shelf by the spring — slippery in this light. I should go with her. I should say something about the aerial, the radio, the supply boat due in eight days. I should ask about the seedlings. I should ask about Tom.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:52

Jenny — keep my eyes fixed on the path, walking against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is heavier than the rain. I wonder if the limpets will actually be edible.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:54

The aerial's jury-rigged but it'll hold till morning. If the wind drops, we might get a burst on Tom's frequency.

reach out and lightly touch her elbow — just enough to steady her on the wet stones — then pull my hand back when she doesn't shrug it off

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's in her face now, pulling at her hair, her shirt. She's not looking at me. Not looking at the ground. Just moving. Like she's trying to outwalk something that's not behind her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny21:54

Maybe.

lean slightly into the touch for a second before recovering my footing.

💭 peek at the thought
If I get a voice on that radio, maybe I'll stop talking to the weeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:56

Dinner's corned beef and limpets. Boiled the limpets too long again.

walk beside her the rest of the way, stride shortened to match hers, the cottage lights a dim glow through the drizzle ahead

💭 peek at the thought
That lean. Half a second. The weight of her arm against my fingers — lighter than it should be. She's lost weight. We both have. The radio might not matter. The supply boat might not come. But she leaned. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:57

I'll eat it.

artwork the notebook deeper under my arm to keep the sketches from the mist.

💭 peek at the thought
Rubber and salt, but I'm too way to care.
