The Rising Tide

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the tide pushes against the reinforced pilings. The dinghy groans against the three mooring lines, tension increasing as the swell grows. The sky thickens, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the water.

Kevin checks the mooring lines as the tide rises and reinforces the dock ring with the remaining oak wedges. Jenny heads to the garden to check the soil pH and prepare the heirloom seed beds before the clouds thicken further.

🌿 Jenny22:05

It's starting. We should get inside before the wind picks up.

Step off the jetty and walk toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy. It feels like the island is holding its breath before it screams.

🔧 Kevin22:06

Hold on—I'll double the stern line first. Don't want her yawing into the pilings.

walk to the dinghy's stern, take the reinforced line, and make a second turn around the bollard before securing it with a round turn and two half-hitches.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock's holding, but the mooring ring's still loose in the mortise. Rain's coming hard—better secure the dinghy properly before we go in.

🌿 Jenny22:06

Hurry up, Kevin. The sky is already falling.

Watch the line tension under the rising tide, then follow him to the way.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fussing with hardware while the pressure is dropping faster than my patience.

🔧 Kevin22:08

Done. Coming.

step off the jetty and walk toward the cottage behind Jenny, glancing back once at the mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's backing southeast already. Let the line take the strain and move.

🌿 Jenny22:09

Let's get the seeds in the kitchen.

Walk across the half-weeded garden toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat is secure. Now if only the roof didn't leak as badly.

🔧 Kevin22:10

You take the tins. I'll batten the tarp corner before it tears.

veer toward the garden beds, crouch at the loose corner, and drive the stake deeper with the heel of my boot.

💭 peek at the thought
Garden tarp's flapping at one corner. Should've staked it tighter yesterday. Seeds can wait five minutes—tarp can't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:11

I've got the tin. Just get that down tight.

Pick up the rusted seed tin from the bench and head inside the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp rips, the whole way crop is gone in minutes.

🔧 Kevin22:12

Right behind you.

jog the last few metres to the cottage door and step inside, pulling it shut against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Stake's holding now. Rain's sheeting across the path. Get inside.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:13

way inside. The barometer is dropping fast.

Set the seed tin on the kitchen table and wipe the condensation off the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is already howling through the floorboards. I need to check if the seeds stayed dry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:14

How far?

cross to the barometer on the wall and tap the glass, reading the needle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Barometer was 1007 at dawn. If it's dropped more than a couple millibars in this hour, we're in for a proper blow.
