Rainy Morning Prep

Jenny sits at the wooden table wrapping her ankle while the rain drums against the tin roof. Kevin checks the barometer and notes the steady pressure at 977 hPa.

Kevin checks the Yanmar engine's electrical connections to ensure the humidity hasn't caused corrosion. Jenny spends the morning organizing the drying heirloom seed packets and checking the damp tin for further rot.

🌿 Jenny04:29

I need to get to the vinegar and salt soak, Kevin. Don't look at me like that.

winces as she shifts her weight, reaching for the jar of vinegar.

💭 thought
My ankle is throbbing in time; if this infection doesn't break soon, I'm never going to see those seeds sprout.
🔧 Kevin04:31

Water's heating on the stove. Let me get the basin.

walk to the wood stove and lift the kettle, checking water temperature with a finger

💭 thought
She's moving slow today. Ankle's worse than she admits. Vinegar soak won't hurt but it won't fix what's tracking up her leg. I've seen this before — sepsis doesn't care about home remedies.
🌿 Jenny04:31

Don't make it too hot. It'll sting the skin.

pours a handful of salt into the basin, watching the grains hit the bottom.

💭 thought
He's trying to be helpful, but I'm just thinking about the moisture in that tin.
🔧 Kevin04:32

It's warm. Not boiling.

set the kettle down and pour water over the salt, stirring with a wooden spoon until it dissolves, then carry the basin to the table and set it in front of her

💭 thought
She's directing the temperature like I don't know a scald from a soak. The salt's clean at least. Her hands are steady but the knuckles are white.
🌿 Jenny04:33

Thanks. I'll check the tin after I soak.

unlaces her sock and lowers the swollen ankle into the water, breathing through the sharp hiss of pain.

💭 thought
If the humidity gets any higher, my grandmother's seeds will just rot in that tin before they ever see the soil.
🔧 Kevin04:34

Take your time. I'll check the radio while you soak.

walk to the radio shelf and power on the shortwave, tuning to 4075 kHz and adjusting the RF gain

💭 thought
The swelling's up past the ankle bone now. Red lines faint but there, tracking toward the calf. She's tough but tough doesn't stop blood poisoning. The antibiotics are gone. Used the last blister pack yesterday. Radio's quiet. Supply boat four days out if it comes. I need to check the Yanmar jumper and get on 4075 at 0600. But first — she needs the leg up, and I need to know what's in that tin.

Midday Meal

The rain has slowed to a drizzle. You meet in the kitchen to prepare the boiled limpets.

Kevin tested the Yanmar's jumper connection and ran it at idle, confirming no mechanical bind despite a persistent vibration above half throttle. Jenny inspected the heirloom seed tin and found the viable tomato and pepper packets still damp but usable, while the moldy basil and lettuce were already isolated. A coconut crab was discovered in the garden overnight, damaging several tomato seedlings before being driven off.

🌿 Jenny04:35

Don't overcook them, we need the salt out, not cooked in.

Place the limpets in the pot of boiling water and start the vinegar soak.

💭 thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, but I need to get these seeds checked before I lose the light.
🔧 Kevin04:36

Two minutes in the boil, then the vinegar bath. I'll watch the clock.

Set a timer for two minutes while the limpets boil, then transfer them to the vinegar soak Jenny prepared.

💭 thought
She's right about the vinegar — cuts the brine without toughening the meat. Good instinct.
🌿 Jenny04:37

Keep them in the vinegar for exactly ten minutes—any longer and they'll be tough as rubber.

Move the limpets from the boiling water into the vinegar bowl, then check the heirloom seed tin for moisture.

💭 thought
If the salt doesn't come out, the whole meal will be bitter, just like this week.
🔧 Kevin04:38

Ten it is. I'll pull them at the mark.

Watch the timer for the vinegar soak, then drain the limpets when it hits ten minutes.

💭 thought
Ten minutes is the sweet spot. She knows this better than I do — watched her do it three times last week.
🌿 Jenny04:39

Let them drain. I'm going to check the tin before I lose any light.

Set the vinegar bowl in the colander and open the heirloom seed tin to inspect the packets.

💭 thought
My ankle is screaming at me, but I need to see if those seeds have turned to mush in the damp.
🔧 Kevin04:41

Right. I'll finish here.

Drain the limpets fully in the colander, then transfer them to a bowl for the pan.

💭 thought
The tin's been holding. Wax seal's good. But damp finds a way.
