The Ascent to the Ridge

The rain has turned into a steady downpour, making the path to the ridge slick with mud. You and Jenny head together toward the stone circle to escape the enclosure of the cottage.

The descent from the shrine was slow and silent, the mud turning to slick clay under the thickening clouds. By the time they reached the cottage, the dry heat had broken into a heavy, humid stillness that promised the air with the scent of ozone and damp earth.

🌿 Jenny05:03

Watch your footing, the stones are slick like glass today.

Lean heavily against a weathered standing stone, shifting my weight off my swollen ankle while watching the rain wash the ancient carvings.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every step, but I need to see the shrine in this light before the day dies completely.

Slow going. Take your time.

walk carefully through the muddy path toward the stone circle, testing each step before committing weight, keeping a hand free to steady her if she needs it

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the stones — the lichen makes them treacherous when wet. My ankle's holding but the ground's uneven. The shrine feels different in rain, older somehow. The 'E' stone and the softwood scrap I carved are somewhere in this circle, weathering like everything else.

🌿 Jenny05:05

I'm fine, Kevin. way need to breathe.

Trace the edge of a worn-down name on the stone with my thumb, feeling the grit of the lichen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too careful, it makes me feel like I'm made of glass instead of just tired.

The air's different up here. Cleaner.

stand beside her at the stone circle, shoulders nearly touching, looking out at the rain-blurred cliffs and the grey sea beyond, letting the downpour wash the dust off both of us

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The ankle, the fever, the weight she's carried alone. But she'd balk at coddling. The rain washes the names clean for a moment — hers, mine, Edward's, the ones carved generations back. All temporary against salt and time.

🌿 Jenny05:07

It's just quiet. That's the difference.

Lean my forehead against the cold, wet stone of the shrine, closing my eyes against the rhythm of the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
It's clean until the salt starts getting into your lungs and the damp makes everything rot.

🔧 Kevin05:07

Mm.

rest a hand on her shoulder, thumb brushing the damp wool of her jacket, not pulling her away — just letting her feel the weight of something solid beside her

💭 peek at the thought
Quiet. She means the cottage — the scratching in the walls, the generator's cough, the silences between us that stretch like slack rope. Here there's only rain on stone and wind in the grass. No engines. No waiting. No letters that may never arrive.

🌿 Jenny05:09

Just a minute more. The light was almost right.

Lean into his hand just a fraction, letting the cold of the rock seep through my clothes while the throb in my ankle fades into a dull ache.

💭 peek at the thought
If I stay here long enough, I might just turn to stone myself like these things.

🔧 Kevin05:09

Take the time.

shift weight to the balls of my feet, scanning the ridge line and the path back, listening for anything beyond rain and wind — a boat engine, a bird call, the generator cutting out — standing watch while she reads what the stones hold today

💭 peek at the thought
The light. She means the way it catches the carvings at this hour — the 'E' stone, the scrap of softwood with its crude message. She's been watching them change. Documenting. The way I watch gauges, listening for the note that means something's about to give.
