Day 687
The chapter for this day hasn't been written yet — it's written once the day closes.
Scenes
the keeper's cottage · dawnMorning rounds and the falling glass
Kevin stands on the porch with the generator's dipstick in hand, checking the main tank level while the barometer needle drifts below 1016. Jenny sits at the table with her ankle propped on a cushion, the sea beet poultice steaming under a clean cloth, a pencil moving over her notebook as she sketches the south slope fracture from memory. The trade wind rattles the loose shutter hinge and carries the smell of rain from the southwest.
Kevin topped off the generator oil and watched the southwest cloud bank thicken while Jenny began the slow trek toward the sea cave with the heirloom seed tin, the handheld VHF, and a driftwood cane. The barometer continued its steady fall to 1016 hPa as the tide dropped, exposing the reef edge.
Generator's half tank. Barometer's 1016 and dropping. Southwest bank's thickening.
Wipe the dipstick clean, set it on the porch rail, and walk to the south edge of the cottage to check the shutter hinge that's rattling.
💭 thought
The wind is shifting. I'm moving the seed tin to the cave today while I can still walk.
Jenny gathers the heirloom seed tin, wraps it in the waterproof tarp, and limps toward the path leading to the sea cave.
💭 thought
Take the stick. And the radio.
Lean the driftwood cane against the table where she can reach it, pick up the handheld VHF from the shelf, check the battery indicator, and hold it out to her.
💭 thought
I've got it. I'll be back before the light fails for good.
Jenny takes the cane and the radio, adjusts her weight on her good leg, and begins the slow trek toward the south slope.
💭 thought
0800 check-in. If you're not back by 1600 I'm coming.
Turn back to the generator, pull the oil can from the shelf, top up the crankcase while the engine's warm, and watch the oil pressure gauge settle.
💭 thought
I'll radio from the cave if I'm delayed. I'll radio from the cave if I'm delayed.
Jenny adjusts her brace, takes a deep breath, and starts toward the south door, cane tapping rhythmically against the stone steps. </think>THOUGHT: The barometer's dropping faster than I thought; I need to reach the cave and secure those se
💭 thought
Kevin — walk to the porch rail, pick up the binoculars hanging there, glass the south slope path for her movement, and note the cloud bank building southwest.
💭 thought
I'll check in at eight.
Jenny tightens her grip on the cane handle and begins the incline, her ankle throbbing with every uneven step.

the keeper's cottage · morningGenerator reserve priming and south slope check-in
Kevin is at the generator shed priming the reserve float from the main diesel drum. Jenny has reached the sea cave entrance with the seed tin and is preparing to stow it inside. The barometer reads lower, the southwest cloud bank looms, and the 0800 shortwave window approaches.
The air is heavy and humid as the tide recedes, exposing the jagged edge of the reef. Jenny attempts to contact the mainland, her face pale from the effort of shifting her weight onto her swollen ankle, while Kevin watches the barometer through the window, noting the steady, worrying drop in pressure as the shortwave static fills the silence.
Kevin — walk back to the cottage, climb onto the porch, pick up the shortwave handset
💭 thought
Tom, this is Jenny on Sorrel Island. Do you copy?
Presses the PTT button and waits for static.
💭 thought
Kevin — lean against the doorframe, arms folded, listening to the static hiss
💭 thought
Jenny — keys the VHF on her belt, checking the signal strength.
💭 thought
Kevin — stay quiet, watch the barometer needle through the window — 1012 now, still falling
💭 thought
Jenny — sets the radio down on the wooden table, wincing as she shifts her weight.

the keeper's cottage · middayThe Rising Pressure
The tide begins to creep back over the reef as the wind picks up from the east. The leak in the cottage shutter begins to drip onto the floor.
