The Rising Pressure

The tide begins to creep back over the reef as the wind picks up from the east. The leak in the cottage shutter begins to drip onto the floor.

The sky thickens with the weight of the wet season, pressing down on the cottage. The tide is rising rapidly, reclaiming the exposed reef edge and threatening the lower sections of the island. Jenny limps to the porch, her ankle swollen and throbbing, she watches the water climb toward the dock while Kevin prepares to patch the leaks in the shutters.

It's dripping again, Kevin.

Lean heavily on the driftwood cane and limp toward the porch door, glancing at the rising water over the reef.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is turning faster than I calculated. And that damn shutter is still leaking; he's probably just staring at the barometer while the house gets damp.

Saw it. Got the tar and lead scraps staged by the workbench. Be right there.

grab the roofing tar tin and scrap lead flashing from the workbench shelf, step out onto the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the bad leg more than she lets on. The storm's pushing in faster than the barometer said it would.

🌿 Jenny13:35

While you're at it, check the north ridge shudder. The soil's unstable there too.

Shift weight off the swollen ankle, wincing as I test the range of motion.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually moving. Still treating this like a maintenance issue instead of a warning sign.

North ridge can wait till the shutters hold. You're dripping on the floorboards same as the roof.

crouch beside her on the porch, peel back the gauze wrap to look at the ankle without asking

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong about the north ridge — the rain's been eating it all week. But she's steering me away from the cottage to keep me from seeing her ankle proper.

🌿 Jenny13:37

The ankle's still hot. And that crack in the south slope—it's not just a hairline anymore. Kevin, the tide's coming back fast. And that south slope fracture—it's widening. I need to check the cave now before the water swallows the path.

Grimace and press the gauze back into place, then pivot toward the window to watch the reef disappear under gray water. </think> Stand up slowly, testing the ankle's weight-bearing capacity, then make for the door.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even bother to ask before stripping the bandage. That ankle's already infected, and he's treating it like a splinter. He's still treating this like a plumbing problem instead of a geological emergency. The south slope won't wait for his tar and lead.

Cave's underwater till the turn. You go now, you swim. Sit. Let me see the ankle proper.

put a hand on her shoulder, steadying her away from the door, then move to the medical kit on the porch table

💭 peek at the thought
She's running on stubborn and salt water. The cave's already flooded at this tide — she knows it, I know it, but she'll go anyway if I don't give her a reason not to.
