evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as dusk settles, the cloud ceiling low and the air thick with humidity. They reach the ring of weathered stones carved with the initials LB, the tide pools invisible below in the gathering dark. A tin of beans rests at the base of one stone, washed up since their last visit.

The air at the old shrine is thick with humidity, the 29°C heat clinging to the skin as the tide is steadily rising, lapping at the lower stones of the garden wall. Jenny holds the heirloom seed tin, testing the weight and the seal, while Kevin watches the fading light behind the north ridge.

Don't touch it yet, the edges are sharp.

Jenny reaches down, picks up the tin, and wipes the grit from the lid with her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the tin like it's a ghost. It's just salt and rust, Kevin.

Beans or petrol. Either way we eat.

Step closer, watching her fingers on the lid, the light failing behind the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
She moves like she knows every stone here. The tin's been in the water — salt crust on the rim, label long gone. Could be anything. Could be nothing. My hands still smell of rope tar and epoxy.

🌿 Jenny17:51

If the seal is gone, we aren't eating it anyway.

Jenny shakes the tin near her ear, listening for the dry rattle of the seeds inside.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always the calories with him. He never notices the salt has already eaten the metal.

🔧 Kevin17:51

Shake all you want. Only one way to know.

Reach for the tin, thumb finding the tab edge, ready to lever it.

💭 peek at the thought
Shaking a rusted tin won't tell her much. If the seal's blown, the contents are soup or poison. She knows that. She's testing me — or the island.

🌿 Jenny17:53

Wait. Let me look first.

Jenny places her hand over his, stopping the movement before he can lever the tab.

💭 peek at the thought
If he forces it, the whole thing will snap and spill everything into the dirt.

🔧 Kevin17:53

Your tin. Your call.

Let my hand fall, step back half a pace, watch her face in the failing light.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's warm on mine. Calloused differently — garden work, not engine work. She's not asking permission. She's telling me to let her look. The ridge wind picks up, carries salt and something else. Rotten? Sweet? Can't place it.

🌿 Jenny17:55

Just stay back for a second.

Jenny turns the tin over in her hands, inspecting the rim for any sign of moisture or mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so impatient. He doesn't see the rust pitting through the seam.

🔧 Kevin17:55

Kevin — stand still, hands at my sides, tracking the tree line behind her where the shadows are thickening.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Good. The wind shifts — brings the smell clearer now. Not rot. Not sweet. Metallic. Old blood or rust, can't tell at this distance. The stones around us hold names worn smooth. LB. Others I can't read. Someone left this here. Deliberate. At the shrine. Not washed up random.

🌿 Jenny17:57

These were Grandma's. I can't risk it.

Jenny slips the tin into her pack and starts walking toward the cottage, away from the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The air's getting heavy with the coming storm. That's why the seal failed.

🔧 Kevin17:57

Grandma's beans.

Fall in behind her on the path, boots finding the worn stones, the radio static faint in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
Grandma's. She knew the moment she turned it over. Recognised something — a mark, a dent, the way the lid sits. The island throws things back at you. Not random. She's walking fast. The path drops steep from here, slick with moss. My knee aches in the damp. I should lead — see the footing — but she's already moving.

🌿 Jenny17:59

We'll check them by the stove.

Jenny enters the cottage, sets the pack on the table, and reaches for the matches.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hungry, I can see it in his jaw, but not the rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:59

Put water on. If they're good, we eat hot.

Hang my oilskin by the door, pull out the chair opposite her, wait.

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage takes us in — warmth, woodsmoke, the generator's low hum outside. She's striking a match before the door swings shut. The tin sits on the table between us, ordinary as a heartbeat. My grandmother's tin. I never met her. Jenny's grandmother. The match flares, catches the kindling. Light spreads across the scratched metal.
