The Rising Tide

The humidity intensifies as the sun dips below the ridge, leaving the salt air sharp in the dark.

Kevin and Jenny spent the evening at the old shrine as the tide began to rise. They reinforced the dinghy's stern line with a long splice and checked the status of the heirloom seeds before heading back to the cottage.

Kevin — walk back toward the cottage, checking the garden wall's base as I pass

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's pushing hard against the garden wall now. That southeast wind from this afternoon held — it's stacking water in the cove. Eight days until the boat, maybe less if the skipper runs the forecast window. I should've checked the dinghy's mooring line again before dark.

The tide is coming in high tonight, check the salt runoff in the morning.

Tuck the seed tin under my arm and walk back toward the cottage, staying in the remaining light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the wall again, but the stones are holding better than my nerves are.

Wall held today. Another foot and it's over the top.

follow her up the path, glancing back at the water line on the stones

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the wall's only two courses higher on the seaward side. If the surge tops it at spring tide, the salt'll kill the tomato beds before we see it. Eight days of that and we're eating tinned corned beef until the next boat.

Then we'll have to move the terrace higher up the ridge.

Stop at the cottage door and wait for him to catch up before I go inside.

💭 peek at the thought
If it goes over the top, the soil is gone to the sea anyway.

🔧 Kevin18:04

Stone's on the beach. Dinghy's the only way to move it.

step onto the porch behind her, pause to check the barometer through the window — 1010, steady

💭 peek at the thought
Moving the terrace means hauling soil, stones, timber up a grade that fights you every step. We'd need the dinghy to bring stone from the beach — and the dinghy's moored in a cove that's waking up nasty. She's already thinking past the problem. I'm still staring at it.

🌿 Jenny18:05

We'll use the winch on the dock once the tide is out.

Set the seed tin down on the table and head for the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
We can't lose the dinghy, not with the boat only eight days out.
