Afternoon Heat

Kevin and Jenny meet at the kitchen table as the sun begins to dip. The barometer holds steady while the humidity remains thick.

Kevin attempted to organize the pantry but struggled with the heavy crates, causing a mess of the supplies. Jenny used the falling tide to forage the tide pools, successfully gathering a fresh supply of limpets.

Coffee's still hot if you want it. Radio's due for the scheduled check in twenty minutes.

pour two tin mugs from the pot on the stove, set one at the table across from me

💭 peek at the thought
She's been quiet all afternoon. The kind of quiet that means she's either thinking too much or not enough. I should've pulled that bendix clean this morning instead of fighting corrosion.

🌿 Jenny21:37

I'll take it. I need to check the soil pH log before I radio in.

Take the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth, and open the notebook to the latest entry.

💭 peek at the thought
way back is screaming from that trench, but the garden is finally looking less like a wasteland.

🔧 Kevin21:38

Log's on the shelf by the aerial. Lime beds holding 6.8 to 7.0. Untreated still sitting 5.5 to 5.8.

lean back in my chair, cradling my mug, watching steam rise into the thick air

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling. The pH log hasn't changed in three weeks. She knows it, I know it. But the radio check means talking to the mainland, and that means the supply boat, and that means...

🌿 Jenny21:39

I'll have to mix it in by hand if the soil is too dry.

Stand up with a stiff groan and walk to the shelf to grab the soil pH log.

💭 peek at the thought
5.5 is too acidic for the tomatoes; I need to get more lime before the boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin21:40

Soil's not dry. Humidity's been ninety percent for a week. You'll turn it to paste.

set my mug down, stand up

💭 peek at the thought
Her knee's been bad since the dock work. She won't say it. I should've done the garden trenches myself.

🌿 Jenny21:41

way I'll wait for the rain to break or the boat to come.

Flip through the log, tracing my finger over the 5.5 reading with a frown.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the air is a wet blanket. If I dig now, I'll just be making mud pits.

🔧 Kevin21:42

Boat's due in four. If it shows, we get lime. If it doesn't, the beds wait anyway.

walk over, look over her shoulder at the log, finger tapping the page where I wrote the last reading

💭 peek at the thought
She's deciding whether to push the garden or wait. The boat's four days out if it comes. The rain might break tomorrow or next week. Either way, the untreated beds aren't growing anything worth eating at 5.5.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:43

I'll check the radio tomorrow morning. Just to be sure they're coming.

Close the log and set it on the table, looking out the window at the weeds-choked patch.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days is a lifetime if the boat doesn't show. I can't let the garden rot while waiting.

🔧 Kevin21:44

Radio check's scheduled 0600. I'll wake you.

turn back to the stove, top up my mug from the pot, the tin clinking quiet

💭 peek at the thought
Tomorrow morning. She's giving the boat one more day before she admits it might not come. I already know it might not — coast guard said diverted, no ETA. Didn't tell her. Still haven't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:45

Don't be late.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, watching the steam vanish in the heavy air.

💭 peek at the thought
0600 is early. If the boat isn't coming, I have to find another way to fix the pH.
