The Rising Humidity

Kevin and Jenny stand by the garden wall as the cloud thickens over the ridge. Jenny checks the soil moisture in the newly sown rows while Kevin examines the tension on the seaward wall stones.

Clouds are thickening under a flat sky, the air turning heavy with the humidity of the wet season. The tide is out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the sand of the south beach. The garden is quiet as the supply boat approaches in four days.

You're drowning the seeds. Pull back on the water—let the top inch dry before you hit it again. And hand me the trowel; I'll fix that bulge before it lets go.

take trowel from Jenny's belt and kneel at the seaward wall, chipping out loose mortar between the third and fourth stones where the soil's pushing through.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil's too wet for this time of morning—Jenny's overwatering again. And that wall's shifting where the roots are pushing through; I can see the gap widening by the third stone from the end. If we don't repoint it today, the next tide'll take more than just mortar.

🌿 Jenny21:12

The soil is compacted, Kevin. It can't breathe the moisture. I'll dig the trench deeper.

Kneel in the dirt and press a finger into the earth near the tomato row, testing the resistance of the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the water, but it's the structure. If the soil doesn't drain, the roots rot before they even wake.

Your trench. Your funeral. But when the blossom-end rot shows up, you're explaining it to the trust in the weekly report.

pack the cleaned joint with fresh mortar, tamping it hard with the trowel handle, then scrape the excess clean with the edge of the blade.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not listening. Compacted soil doesn't drain—digging deeper just makes a sump. The tomatoes'll rot at the crown. But she's already got her hands in it, and arguing wastes breath I don't have.

🌿 Jenny21:14

The rot won't show up if I get the drainage right. I know that.

Stand up and wipe the mud from my knees, looking at the line where the wall meets the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about the trust like it's a judge, but the island doesn't care about their reports.

🔧 Kevin21:15

The bendix on the Yanmar's dragging. I'm pulling it now while the weather holds. Radio check's at noon.

stand, wipe mortar dust from knees, and walk toward the cottage to fetch the starter motor tools from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's decided. Nothing I say changes it. The wall's holding for now—mortar's tight, stones seated. Might as well get the Yanmar bendix pulled before the tide turns and the supply boat window closes.

🌿 Jenny21:17

I'll start the trench now. Don't slip.

Pick up the heavy trowel and way digging into the saturated earth at the edge of the tomato row.

💭 peek at the thought
Always the engine, always the mechanics. He doesn't see the life struggling to break the surface.
