The Rising Tide

The tide begins to turn, filling the rock pools as the first heavy drops of rain fall against the island.

Kevin worked on the dinghy at the dock, securing a breast line and chafe protection while the tide rose. Jenny cleared weeds from the back garden patch and began the first irrigation trench for the tomato rows.

Weather's turning proper now. Rain'll wash salt off the spar but ruin the epoxy cure. Need to get the Yanmar starter off before the bendix seizes solid, and the mast step doubler wants dry wood — three days cure minimum. Supply boat's four days out if she comes at all. Barometer's holding but that southwest swell's building.

Step back into the porch, haul the rolled tarp off the shelf, shake it out, and carry it down to the dock where the dinghy sits.

She's not wrong. Barometer was 1017 this morning, now the air feels heavier. Salt spray on the tools'll ruin the file teeth and the micrometer. Should've thrown a tarp over the work area yesterday.

At the dock, uncoil the new half-inch three-strand, pass a bight through the dinghy's bow cleat, and lead it to the ring bolt on the pier — then wrap the chafe point with sail twine from the tool roll.
