A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny had tea and corned beef while discussing the falling barometer and the need for radio repairs. Kevin confirmed the epoxy was ready for sanding, and Jenny planned to tend to the seabird chick and seedlings.

🔧 Kevin13:52

Kevin — walk to the porch and check the dinghy gunwales — press a thumbnail into the epoxy to test cure. Then check the pantry trap.

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage is quiet. Too quiet after a morning of wind and tools. Jenny's not in the kitchen. Radio's silent. Barometer's still rising — 1022 and climbing. Means wind's building somewhere out there. Need to check the dinghy epoxy cure before it skins over wrong. And the rat trap.

🌿 Jenny13:52

Did it set?

Walk to the kitchen and open a tin of corned beef.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still obsessed with that boat. I can hear him out there, poking at the epoxy. I need to eat something before I pass out from the heat.

🔧 Kevin13:54

Nearly. Thumbprint leaves a mark but doesn't stick. Good for sanding. Want to hold the tub while I do starboard?

Pick up the sanding block from the porch rail and walk toward the kitchen doorway, keeping my voice even. Watch her hands — see if she flinches again when I move.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the epoxy — tacky but not liquid. If I sand now, it'll key. If I wait, it'll be too hard. Corned beef tin opening — she's making lunch. Or bait. Either way, she's here. Close enough to talk.

🌿 Jenny13:54

In a minute. Let me eat first.

Scoop some corned beef onto a plate and slide it toward the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to pull me into his orbit again. I can't focus on sanding when my stomach is cramping.

🔧 Kevin13:56

Fair enough. I'll make tea.

Set the sanding block on the table edge. Fill the kettle from the tank tap and set it on the wood stove. Pull out the chair opposite her and sit. Wait.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling. Or just hungry. Either way, the epoxy won't wait forever — heat like this drives the cure fast. But pushing her never worked. I'll eat too. Keep the rhythm normal. The tin's already open.

🌿 Jenny13:56

The barometer is falling. 1006 hPa.

Eat a bite of the corned beef and glance toward the window at the thickening clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is heavy today. He's waiting for me to say something, or maybe he's just waiting for the water to boil. I can't look at him while I'm chewing.

🔧 Kevin13:59

Dropping fast. Southwest'll be on us by dark. Need the aerial fixed before the scheduled check. Got the spark plug insulators in the engine box — can turn one on the lathe if the generator runs.

Reach for the barometer on the shelf, tap the glass lightly with a fingertip, confirm the needle. Then pour hot water into the two mugs on the table — tea bags already waiting. Slide one toward her without looking.

💭 peek at the thought
That's a sixteen millibar drop since midday. Fast. Southwest swell'll be pushing in by evening if the trend holds. She's watching the window — she feels it too. The radio check with Tom is scheduled for tonight. Aerial's still dead. Need to fabricate that insulator from the spark plug ceramics before then, or we're blind.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:59

Thanks. I'll help with the aerial once I've fed the chick.

Take a sip of the tea and reach for the notebook to check the cloud sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking in mechanics again. Insulators and lathes. I'm thinking about the pepper seedlings and whether the shade cloth will hold if the wind picks up.

🔧 Kevin14:01

Chick still taking water?

Blow on my tea. Watch the steam curl. Don't look at the window.

💭 peek at the thought
She said "help with the aerial" not "you fix the aerial." Different. The chick's in the box on the shed top shelf — towel for warmth, she's been checking it mornings. Notebook's got her cloud sketches, tide pool morphology, the Carex transect data. She's recording. That's something. Tea's hot. Corned beef's salt on my fingers. Barometer at 1006 and falling. Generator'll need to run for the lathe. Fuel's decent. Spar epoxy still tacky — that's the wind generator mount. If the spar fails, no power, no radio, no light.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:01

Yes. It's getting stronger, but it's still a scrap of nothing.

Set the notebook down and stand up, wiping my hands on my trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
He remembers the chick. That's... something. I hope the heat hasn't made it too lethargic to eat.
