The first drops fall

Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden as the first heavy gusts of wind hit the dusty leaves.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny13:41

Look at the sky, Kevin. The wind is shifting. We need to get the seedlings secured before the gusts start ripping the shade cloth.

Walk over to the pepper seedlings and press the soil firmly around the stems with her fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy. That pressure drop is going to hit us hard, and these peppers are sitting ducks.

🔧 Kevin13:43

On it. You take the tomato rows, I'll do the peppers and basil. Tie-downs at the base, not the top — wind gets under the cloth if you don't weight the edges.

walk to the pepper seedling trays and crouch down, checking the twine lashings on the shade cloth frame, then start reinforcing the corner tie-downs with heavier cord from my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The pressure's been building all morning — 1021 and rising means wind, not rain. The shade cloth's only held on by twine and hope.

🌿 Jenny13:43

Don't over-tension the mesh or it'll just rip the grommets out. Leave a little give for the wind to breathe.

Move to the tomato rows and begin weighting the edges of the shade cloth with flat river stones.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the weighting, but he's rushing the knots. If he pulls too tight, he'll tear the mesh.

🔧 Kevin13:44

Hand me those two by the spring? Smooth ones, palm-sized. I'll do the basil next, then check the lettuce — it's the most tender.

take two flat river stones from my pocket and place them on the shade cloth corners over the pepper tray, then walk to the basil tray and repeat, pressing the cloth down gently at the edges without pulling tight

💭 peek at the thought
Good call. Stones won't chafe the fabric like rope knots will. I've got a few in my pocket from the tidepools — flat ones, good for weight.

🌿 Jenny13:44

The lettuce is already curling. We might need to move the tray closer to the wall for a windbreak.

Finish weighting the tomato row and walk toward the lettuce tray to inspect the leaf margins.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually listening. I wonder if he's as nervous about this front as I am.

🔧 Kevin13:46

Yeah, slide it against the wall, corner by the herb pots. I'll hold the tray while you pull the cloth over it — keeps the wind from getting underneath.

brace myself behind the lettuce seedling tray and grip the sides firmly, ready to stabilize it as Jenny moves it toward the south garden wall for shelter

💭 peek at the thought
Curling means moisture stress — wind's pulling it faster than the roots can keep up. The south wall blocks the worst of the gusts. We should've thought of that yesterday.

🌿 Jenny13:47

Just a few more inches... there. Hold it steady.

Carefully slide the lettuce tray against the south wall and pull the shade cloth taut over the top, tucking the edges under the river stones.

💭 peek at the thought
It's a delicate balance—too close to the stone and the heat will bake them, too far and the wind will shred them.

🔧 Kevin13:48

Steady. You got it. Now let's check the rat trap — if the wind's up, the pantry door might've rattled open again. I'll grab the corned beef tin.

release the lettuce tray and walk toward the cottage door, pulling the corned beef tin from the shelf inside as I pass, then head for the pantry to inspect the trap and reset it if needed

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The wall breaks the wind, and the stones hold the cloth without tearing it. We bought ourselves a few hours — maybe until the gusts ease or the boat comes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny13:48

I'll be right back. I need to check the chick first—if the wind hits the shed, that box is going to slide.

Turn away from the cottage and hurry toward the shed, scanning the roof for the cardboard box.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't think about rats right now. The seabird chick is still out there on the shed roof and the wind is picking up.

🔧 Kevin13:50

Put a rock on the lid. Or wedge it between the rafters. I'll check the trap and meet you there.

continue to the pantry, crouch down to examine the rat trap behind the shelves, and reset it with fresh corned beef fat while listening for the wind rising in the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
Smart. The shed roof catches every gust. That box won't hold without weight on it.
