Evening Cooling

The sun begins to dip, and the temperature starts to drop. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen to prepare the evening meal.

Kevin prepares a limpet and sea beet stew using rendered corned beef fat while the heat lingers over the island. Jenny examines the lichen at the old shrine, noting the drop in barometric pressure as the tide recedes.

🔧 Kevin16:03

Limpet stew again? You’ve got the corned beef fat rendered — smells like it’s doing the work.

Move to the stove, lift the lid off the pot, and stir the limpets and chopped sea beet into the simmering fat, checking the consistency with the wooden spoon. Add a pinch of salt from the jar near the sink.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat’s breaking. Good. I can feel the shift in the air — cooler now, the kind of evening that makes you want to sit still and not rush. I’m tired, but not bone-tired like this morning. The dinghy’s almost ready. Just the fuel line and the sail chafe. I’ll get to it tomorrow. For now, I want to eat something warm and not think about how much we haven’t said.

🌿 Jenny16:04

It's the only thing we've got that isn't out of a tin, Kevin. Just... don't overcook them this time. Please.

Lean against the counter, rubbing a tired thumb over the edge of the notebook, watching him stir.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving, but the thought of those rubbery things makes my stomach turn. I can't even look at the pot.

🔧 Kevin16:05

I won’t. I’ll take them off the heat the second they start to curl. Promise.

Lower the flame under the pot until it’s just a whisper of blue, then rest the spoon across the rim and turn to face her, leaning my hips against the counter opposite, arms crossed, watching her eyes — not the notebook, not the steam, her.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me. Not the food. Me. And she’s asking — not demanding, just asking — not to ruin it. Like she knows I’ve been rushing. Like she’s noticed I’ve been trying to fix everything but the quiet things. I don’t answer with words. I just slow my hand.

🌿 Jenny16:06

(A small, tired laugh) You're very confident for someone who turned the last batch into pencil erasers.

Look up and meet his eyes for a second, then quickly glance away toward the window, shifting weight from one foot to the other.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing that thing. Looking at me like I'm a specimen he's trying to figure out. I can't handle the intensity right now.

🔧 Kevin16:06

Yeah. Well. Erasers don’t feed two people. Stew does. I’ll get it right this time.

Push off the counter, pick up the tin of limpets from the shelf — the fresh ones, not the boiled — and hold it out toward her, wordless, waiting for her to take it. If she does, I’ll start cleaning them under the tap.

💭 peek at the thought
She remembers. Of course she does. I turned them into rubber. She’s teasing, but it’s not light. It’s the kind of joke that carries weight — the weight of all the times I’ve messed up the small things while chasing the big ones. The dinghy. The engine. The garden. The silence between us. She’s not laughing at me. She’s laughing *with* me — and that’s rarer. I let it hang. Don’t deflect. Don’t fix it with action. Just let it be.

🌿 Jenny16:08

I'll do it. You just... keep an eye on the heat.

Take the tin from him, moving to the sink to rinse the limpets under the tap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying. He's actually trying. I don't know if I have the energy to be prickly about it.

🔧 Kevin16:09

Heat’s low. Just a breath of flame. I’ll keep it there.

Turn slowly, walk to the small table by the window, and sit down on the bench — not to rest, just to be still. Pull the notebook toward me, open it to a blank page, and lay my palms flat on the cover. Don’t write.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s taking over. Not because I can’t — but because she needs to. To feel useful. To not be the one waiting. I step back. Let her have this. The sink’s running, the water’s cold, and I can hear the limpets shifting in the tin. I don’t move to help. I just watch the steam curl up from the pot, the way it catches the last light through the window — gold, then grey. The barometer’s still falling. But here, now, it’s quiet. Not empty. Just… quiet.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:10

Be careful with that. I've got the morphology notes in there.

Scrub a limpet vigorously under the cold water, not looking back at him.

💭 peek at the thought
Why is he touching my notebook? It's the only thing here that's actually mine, the only thing that's organized.
