Evening Meal
Kevin and Jenny meet at the kitchen table as the sun finally dips. The stew is served hot from the cast iron skillet.
The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the cottage as the air shimmers over the sand. Inside, the only movement is the slow drift of dust and the occasional scratching of the rat behind the pantry. The tide is retreating rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the southern pools, but the air remains heavy and stagnant.
It smells better than the limpets from yesterday.
Sit down slowly and pick up a spoon, staring at the surface of the stew.

I didn't know you were still eating them.
Take a small, cautious bite of the stew and chew slowly.

Collected more at the tide pools this afternoon. Spring tides. They're there if you look.
keep eating, steady, not watching her

I was at the shrine today. The lichen is reacting to the pressure drop.
Set the spoon down with a soft clink and lean back in the chair.

Barometer's been dropping since dawn. Hit 1026 now. Feels like the air's thinning before a break.
push the skillet slightly toward her, offer more stew without looking up
