The Midday Heat

Kevin and Jenny stand in the shade of the garden wall, watching the heat shimmer. The supply boat is still ten days away, and the water level is low.

The brutal 35°C heat bakes the island, making the air shimmer over the garden. Kevin checks the water levels and the parched soil while Jenny manages the delicate heirloom seedling trays in the stifling shade.

🌿 Jenny19:36

The water is too low for the limpets. We need to check the tank.

Jenny wipes sweat from her brow with a grimy forearm and stares at the parched earth of the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the heat doesn't break soon, those seeds will just turn to dust in the tin.

Three ninety-four. Down six from dawn. We're losing more to evaporation than drinking.

walk to the water tank and check the gauge, then wipe dust off the sight glass

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 394 litres. Six litres gone since this morning. She's right — we're burning through it faster than I thought with this heat.

🌿 Jenny19:38

We need to move the seed tin inside the cottage. The heat is cooking the sprouts.

Jenny picks up a withered weed from the garden bed and snaps it between her fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
Six litres in a day? The island is drinking us before the boat does.

🔧 Kevin19:39

Already on the kitchen counter. Moved them at first light.

crouch and press a finger into the soil beside a tomato seedling, checking moisture depth

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Tin's metal — turns into an oven in this sun. Seedlings on the counter by the stove at least get the stone floor's cool.

🌿 Jenny19:40

I'll go boil the limpets. I'm too hungry to think straight.

Jenny picks up the bucket of limpets and walks toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's paying attention now, but the soil is still a brick.

🔧 Kevin19:40

Don't forget the lid — steam's wasting water we don't have.

continue along the garden wall, tapping loose stones with the trowel handle to test soundness

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast — heat's getting to her. Boil those limpets, get some protein in her. I'll finish the wall check so we're not both chasing shadows.

🌿 Jenny19:42

I know how to use a pot. I'll use the lid.

Jenny enters the kitchen and sets the bucket on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Every drop is a battle I'm losing to the sun.

🔧 Kevin19:43

(saying nothing, just a grunt of acknowledgement)

finish the garden wall inspection, marking three more loose coping stones with chalk, then walk back toward the cottage for the radio check

💭 peek at the thought
Sharp. She's fraying. Heat does that. Let her cook. I'll finish the wall and check the radio schedule — 1400 check coming up, and the aerial's still down.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:44

I'll check the seed tin again once the water is boiling.

Jenny fills the cast iron skillet with water and sets it on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is a physical weight pressing on my shoulders.

🔧 Kevin19:44

(silent, boots quiet on the porch boards)

step into the cottage, pull the shortwave log from the shelf, and settle at the table to wait for the 1400 window

💭 peek at the thought
Water on the stove. Good. She'll check the tin — smart, catches me if I missed anything. Radio's at 1400. Need to be at the set by then. Aerial's still jury-rigged since the insulator shattered, but the spare porcelain's holding. Mostly.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:46

Water's starting to simmer.

Jenny places the limpets in the skillet and watches for the water to bubble.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence in here is heavier than the heat.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:47

Two minutes. Don't let it roll.

flip the radio on, let the tubes warm, and tune to the supply boat frequency — 4125 kHz — listening to the static hiss

💭 peek at the thought
Simmering. Good. She's methodical — lid on, heat controlled. The limpets'll toughen if she boils them hard. Radio window in ten minutes. Log's open to yesterday's page: French trawler, coast guard, no supply boat ETA. Same story every day.
