Evening Cooling Down

The sun finally begins to dip, and the temperature drops slightly. You meet in the kitchen to prepare the evening meal.

Kevin spent the brutal heat reinforcing the dock planks and securing the mooring, ensuring everything holds against the rising tide. Jenny attempted to manage the heirloom seed trays, but the oppressive heat caused the delicate sprouts to wilt rapidly despite the shade cloth.

The limpets are done. We'll eat them with the sea beet leaves to cut the salt.

Place the boiled limpets on the cast iron skillet and start chopping the dried sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I can barely think, and these limpets are going to be like rubber anyway.

Smells better than boot leather.

walk to the water barrel on the porch, scrub hands with the gritty soap and a rag, dry them on my trousers, then return to the kitchen table

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's finally breaking. Good. My hands are still grimy from the engine work earlier — need to wash up before eating. The limpets smell right, not overcooked.

🌿 Jenny19:50

It's the best we've got until the boat comes back.

Toss the chopped sea beet into the skillet with the limpets and let them sizzle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's joking, even if the heat is still sitting on my chest.

🔧 Kevin19:50

Boat's due in ten. If it comes.

pull out the chair and sit at the table, watching the skillet

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Ten days until the supply boat's due, and that's if it shows. The corned beef tins won't last forever. Should check the generator fuel tomorrow — been running it more with this heat.

🌿 Jenny19:52

It usually does. way eat before it gets cold.

Slide the skillet off the wood stove and set it on the table between us.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'm eating the seed tin by next week.

🔧 Kevin19:52

Right.

pick up a fork and start eating, the limpets chewy but the sea beet tender and slightly bitter in a good way

💭 peek at the thought
She's practical. Always has been. The sea beet'll cut through the brine of the limpets. Good eating for what we've got.

🌿 Jenny19:54

The salt is a bit much, but helps.

Scoop a piece of limpet and a handful of sea beet onto my plate, chewing slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I could eat the notebook, but this is actually decent.

🔧 Kevin19:54

Salt keeps you upright. Ten days, we'll manage.

chew another mouthful, wipe sweat from the back of my neck with my forearm

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's what we've got. Body needs it in this heat anyway. The beet takes the edge off. She's not wrong about the boat — usually shows, but "usually" doesn't hold water when you're counting tins.
