Evening De-brief

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the sun finally begins to dip, the heat still trapped in the stone walls.

The morning air is heavy and dry, the trade wind providing a slight relief against the rising pre-dawn heat. Inside the cottage, the cast-iron skillet still holds the faint warmth from last night's limpets, while the shortwave radio remains a silent hunk of plastic and wire, its broken aerial a constant reminder of their isolation.

🔧 Kevin19:56

Water's hot. Tank's down to three-ninety-seven.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her move through the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
The stone holds heat like a grudge. Jenny's been out on the cliffs all day — tide pools, morphology, the notebook. I've been at the dock. We haven't spoken since morning. Don't know if that's normal or not anymore.

🌿 Jenny19:57

I know. I'm boiling the limpets now.

Jenny wipes her hands on her damp apron and reaches for the cast iron skillet on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so tired I can barely stand, and the heat is like a blanket.

🔧 Kevin19:58

Radio check at fourteen-hundred. Nothing but static. French trawler didn't answer either.

step inside, pull out the chair at the table, sit heavily

💭 peek at the thought
She's cooking. That's something. The limpets from the tide pools — she gathered them, she's cooking them. Normal evening. Except the heat's been brutal for weeks and the supply boat's ten days out with no confirmation. Radio's dead. Dinghy's got no engine. I'm standing in a doorway saying nothing useful.

🌿 Jenny19:58

They'll come. We have enough water.

Jenny drops the limpets into the boiling water, the steam rising to dampen her face.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in ten days, we'll be eating salt air.

🔧 Kevin20:00

Dock held at high tide. New planks seated. Mooring ring's solid.

reach for the coffee jar on the shelf, measure two spoons into the pot, set water to boil on the stove's far burner

💭 peek at the thought
She believes that. Or she's decided to act like she does. Either way, the limpets will be done in three minutes — any longer and they're rubber. She knows that. She knows the tide tables, the seed germination rates, which way the wind shifts before a front. She doesn't know the supply boat was diverted two weeks ago and the coast guard gave no ETA. I didn't tell her. Still haven't decided if I will.

🌿 Jenny20:01

Good. I need to check the seedlings again.

Jenny stirs the limpets with a wooden spoon, watching the shells opening in the water.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat isn't drifting away like the radio is.
