Evening Stagnation

The air is still still as the sun dips behind thick clouds. You meet in the cottage to discuss the delay in the boat repairs.

Kevin inspected the dinghy transom and gudgeons by lantern light, finding the starboard gudgeon strap loose and the transom core wet and soft over a hand's breadth. Jenny finished her sea beet salt gland sketches and checked the water tank, confirming it remains full at 400 litres. The rain hammered the roof steadily through the evening.

The air is too heavy for the serious today; we have to wait for a dry window or the whole patch will just peel.

Trace the edge of a tomato seed with a fingernail, avoiding the damp spot on the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop, the epoxy won't cure and these seeds will rot before the supply boat even shows on the horizon.

Aye. Barometer's holding 1031, but the dew point's not dropping. Need a proper nor'easter to scrub the air out.

set the chisel down on the workbench and pull the kettle toward the stove, filling it from the tank

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Humidity this high, epoxy won't cross-link — it'll just sit there tacky and fail under load. Waste of good mat and resin.

Just a few hours of dry wind, not a storm. The soil is already turning to grey.

Move the seed trays closer to the warmth of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
A nor'easter would just wash the seedlings into the sea; I need heat, not a gale.

🔧 Kevin01:24

Soil's weeping lime. You want me to run another pH strip tonight?

light a match and touch it to the kindling in the stove, watching the flame catch

💭 peek at the thought
Grey soil means the lime's washing out. Beds'll go acid again before the tomatoes set fruit.

🌿 Jenny01:26

Not yet. way let the surface dry out a bit before we mess with the chemistry.

Pick up the notebook and start sketching the salt glands on the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pH is shifting again, the tomatoes won't stand a chance in this acidic-heavy dirt.
