Night at the keeper's cottage

Rain drums the roof. The wood stove glows low. Kevin sits at the workbench cleaning gudgeon bolts in a jar of penetrating oil. Jenny wraps her wrists in a cloth. The seed trays steam faintly on the counter. The barometer holds at 1031 hPa.

The humidity hangs heavy over the cottage, thick with the scent of salt and drying sea beet. The sky is a seamless sheet of grey, pressing down on the island with a weight that hasn't yet broken into rain. The air is still, save for the occasional rhythmic scratching of the rat-trapped behind the pantry floorboards.

🌿 Jenny01:29

The air is too heavy for wiring tonight, Kevin.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins sketching the cross-section of a sea beet leaf in the margin of her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop, those seeds will mold before the boat even arrives.

Mm. Epoxy's no good tonight anyway. Tub's gone cold-honey thick. Set it by the stove — might loosen by morning.

continue cleaning gudgeon bolts, wiping each one on a rag before setting them on the bench to dry

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — epoxy won't cure in this humidity. The tub's already thick as tar. Better to let it warm by the stove slow and steady.

🌿 Jenny01:33

I'll move it there. Just don't let it get too hot.

Jenny moves the tub of epoxy close to the edge of the wood stove, careful not to disturb the drying seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the heat will fix everything, but the moisture is deep in the wood fibers.

Thanks.

pick up the next bolt, wire-brush the threads, drop it back in the oil jar

💭 peek at the thought
She handles my mess without asking. Always has.
