Afternoon rain and radio work

Kevin walks up from the dock through steady rain, the barometer at 980 hPa and falling fast. Jenny is at the kitchen table with the shortwave radio, the cracked insulator still non-functional, and a filed spark plug ceramic waiting beside a tub of thick epoxy. The limpets sit cooling in a pot. The wind is rising.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny15:33

Barometer's at 978. It's falling.

Push the tub of thick epoxy toward the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back. The pressure is dropping too fast; if we don't get this insulator sorted and the seedlings protected, the storm will take them both. I'm starving, but I can't look at those rubbery limpets right now.

🔧 Kevin15:33

Warm the epoxy tin first. Set it on the stove top a minute. Cold epoxy won't wet the ceramic.

pick up the epoxy tub and hold it near the wood stove's side to warm it, then sit at the table with the filed spark plug ceramic powder and start mixing once the epoxy thins

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I like. 978 and still falling. That insulator repair needs to happen now, not later. Epoxy's thick from the cold — needs heat to flow right. I'll warm the tub first, then mix the ceramic powder in. Jenny's already set it out. She knows the drill.

🌿 Jenny15:34

Just make it stick. The rain is getting under the eaves.

Sketch the fracture pattern of the insulator in the notebook while waiting for the epoxy.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always got a fix for the physical stuff, but the salt is still getting through the cracks. way stomach is so empty it'saching.

🔧 Kevin15:35

Mm.

mix the filed spark plug ceramic powder into the warmed epoxy until it's a thick paste, then apply it carefully into the insulator's fracture lines, building up the cracked surfaces and sealing the edges, working methodically from one end t

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The rain's already finding its way in. Wind's backing west — heard it shift in the last ten minutes. This repair has to hold in driving rain and thirty-knot gusts. Tape failed last time. The ceramic-epoxy mix is the only shot. Need to work fast before the epoxy kicks.

🌿 Jenny15:36

The limpets are in the pot. They're... rubbery.

Reach for the pot of boiled limpets and pour a small portion into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so precise when he's focused. It's the only time he's not buzzing with that frantic, jagged energy. I need to eat something before I shake.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin15:36

They're food.

take the bowl of limpets, fork a few into my mouth, chew without complaint, and reach for the notebook to check the insulator sketch while the epoxy cures

💭 peek at the thought
Rubbery limpets. Overcooked. Again. She's distracted — radio, weather, the barometer dropping. Happens. Still protein. Still hot. I'll eat.

🌿 Jenny15:38

If it doesn't hold, we're blind until the supply boat.

Lean back in the chair and watch the rain lash against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even flinch at the texture. He just absorbs it. He's looking at my sketch—he knows I don't just draw for the sake of it; I'm mapping the failure.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin15:38

It'll hold. Mixed the ceramic right. Epoxy's setting.

watch the insulator repair, let the epoxy cure for a few minutes, then test the seal by dripping a bit of water on it to see if it beads or soaks in, keeping one hand on the radio mic in case we get a break in the static

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. No radio means no weather, no boat ETA, no voice from outside. Just us, the island, and the storm. This insulator has to hold. Not just for contact — for peace of mind. For the choice to leave, when we make it.
