← Day 156

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

The Pressure Drops

Kevin stands by the radio mast while Jenny remains inside the still-air cottage.

Kevin tested the dinghy's Yanmar engine under load in a building swell and found it running clean with no misses or vibration. Jenny sealed the north-facing vents with wax against the salt spray and boiled limpets on the wood stove, though the wax job was uneven and the limpets turned out rubbery.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You check the tension on the wires. The rising tide is just start lapping against the dock planks.

🔧 Kevin15:20

Kevin — walk to the end of the dock and check the dinghy's mooring lines, then untie and push off to test the Yanmar under load

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing earlier than the chart said. Barometer's still dropping — this front's moving faster than the forecast. Need to finish the insulator and get the dinghy tested before the chop builds.

🔧 Kevin15:24

Kevin — throttle up and steer the dinghy out past the harbour mouth into the building swell, listening for misses or vibration

💭 peek at the thought
Engine caught first pull. Runs clean at idle. Now need to put her under way — see how she handles the chop building off the point. The insulator repair held on the bench; real test is underway with the aerial shaking.

🔧 Kevin15:28

Kevin — trim the motor up, turn a wide circle back toward the dock, and kill the engine to drift the last ten metres alongside the jetty

💭 peek at the thought
She holds. No miss at two thousand RPM, no smoke, no water in the oil. The spare float needle seated proper. Only thing singing is the prop cavitation in the chop — need to trim the motor up a notch. Radio aerial's whipping but the porcelain insulator's dry. That repair's good.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You move the plastic tarp over the seed tin. A first gust of wind whistles through the door frame.

🌿 Jenny15:22

Jenny — walk to the north-facing vents and gather the wax.

💭 peek at the thought
That whistle is the house telling me I'm behind schedule. If the salt spray gets in now, the air will be caustic by morning.

🌿 Jenny15:26

Jenny — apply the wax to the north-facing vents, smoothing it firmly into the crevices to seal them against the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
My fingers are shaking a bit from the cold, but the seal needs to be airtight. One gap is all it takes for the salt to eat the interior.

🌿 Jenny15:30

Jenny — place the fresh limpets in a pot of water on the wood stove and bring them to a boil.

💭 peek at the thought
Vents are sealed. Now for the limpets; I can't think on an empty stomach, and the rain is only getting heavier.
