The First Pressure Drop

Kevin crouches over the Yanmar engine in the dinghy, checking the mounting bolts as the tide recedes. Jenny stands on the planks, watching the barometer needle while while clouds thicken over the ridge.

Kevin finishes torquing the last mounting bolts on the Yanmar to 35Nm, wiping the surface clean with a rag. Jenny tests the stability of the rotten dock plank, noting the wood is soft. They both agree to finish the radio seals before the weather turns.

🌿 Jenny15:05

The way is falling, Kevin. We need to finish those seals before the wind shifts.

pulls the notebook from her waist and sketches the current cloud formation over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; if it hits 975, the salt spray will ruin the vents by morning.

🔧 Kevin15:06

Aye. Give me two minutes to torque these bolts, then I'll hit the insulator with the epoxy.

Torque the Yanmar engine mounting bolts to 35Nm using the torque wrench, then wipe the mounting surface clean with a rag.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the barometer's dropping, and those seals won't hold if the wind comes in off the cliffs. I need to move fast.

🌿 Jenny15:07

Two own. Then I'm starting the wax on the north vents.

walks to the edge of the dock and tests the rotten timber plank for stability.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get that seal right, the salt will eat the wiring before the next boat.

🔧 Kevin15:08

Right. Don't slip on the rot.

Finish torquing the last two mounting bolts on the Yanmar, double-check alignment, then grab the epoxy tub and filed spark plug ceramic from the tool bag and head for the shortwave mast.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving to the next job. Good. The vents need sealing before rain drives sideways through them.

🌿 Jenny15:09

I'm getting the limpets started. I'm starving.

picks up the handful of cleaned limpets and heads toward the cottage kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on that engine while the sky is literally turning lead.

🔧 Kevin15:10

Put the kettle on too.

Walk up from the dock to the cottage kitchen, set the epoxy tub on the stove's warming shelf to thin it, then mix a small batch with the filed spark plug ceramic powder.

💭 peek at the thought
Breakfast first, radio second. The epoxy needs warmth to cure anyway—the stove'll help.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:11

The kettle's on. The limpets need to boil anyway.

fills the pot with water and sets it on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always ordering me when I'm the one who actually sees the way.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Kevin — stir the epoxy-ceramic mix thoroughly with a stick until uniform, then carry it and the shortwave mast insulator bracket out to the radio mast at the hilltop.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Water heating. The epoxy's softening on the shelf. I can work the ceramic into it while the limpets cook.
