The Gathering Storm

The smell of boiling limpets fills the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof.

Kevin works to seal the shortwave radio insulator using the porcelain spare and self-amalgamating tape. Jenny checks the seed trays in the kitchen, noting the high humidity from the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny15:12

The tide is turning early. Get the gear inside.

Drain the water from the limpets and grab the wax pot.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if I don't get those vents sealed, the salt will ruin the notebook by tonight.

🔧 Kevin15:14

On it.

walk to the porch and grab the coiled new rope and oarlock bracket, then head down to the dock to secure the dinghy lines and pull the gear up the beach

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down hard now. Barometer was already dropping. She's right — tide's turning early and the dock gear needs securing before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny15:15

Watch your step! The rocks are slicker than yesterday.

Transfer the limpets to a colander and start the wax for the vents.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; he'll slip on the rocks if he doesn't watch the swell.

🔧 Kevin15:16

Yeah.

pick my way down the rocky path to the dock, testing each step, carrying the rope and bracket to the dinghy

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The kelp on the north ledge goes treacherous with the first rain. Dock planks'll be icy too. Need to move quick before the swell pushes up under the walkway.

🌿 Jenny15:16

way don't lose it. The tide is already coming in.

Heat the wax on the stove and prepare the brushes.

💭 peek at the thought
If he drops that bracket in the surf, it's gone to the deep.

🔧 Kevin15:18

Not losing anything.

reach the dinghy, check the current stern line chafe, start splicing in the new half-inch three-strand with a long splice and serve it with sail twine

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing faster than I thought. Water's already lapping the lower dock planks. Dinghy's dancing on its lines. Need to get the stern line reinforced and the oarlock bracket bolted before the swell gets worse.
