Preparing for the squall

Kevin and Jenny stand on the porch as the wind finally picks up. The first heavy drops of rain hit the roof.

The rain continues its steady drumming on the roof of the cottage, turning the air thick with the smell of damp earth and curing epoxy. The tide is falling, exposing more of the rocky shoreline outside, while the barometer continues to drop, signaling an approaching front.

🌿 Jenny16:35

We need to get the trays inside. The epoxy isn't set yet.

Step back into the kitchen and pull the door shut against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that vent doesn't hold, the whole kitchen gets lashed out.

🔧 Kevin16:35

Right. I'll grab the generator cover.

step into the kitchen and gather the seed trays from the table, moving them to the bedroom floor

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Epoxy won't cure in this humidity anyway. Trays first, then secure the rest.

🌿 Jenny16:37

Keep them away from the wall. The stone might sweat from the cold.

Pick up the heavy-duty tarp and move toward the wood stove to check for leaks in the kitchen window frame.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator gets wet, we're in the dark for the whole week.

🔧 Kevin16:37

Copy.

carry the seed trays into the bedroom and set them on the floor away from the walls

💭 peek at the thought
Stone sweats, trays rot. Bedroom floor's drier. Move them.

🌿 Jenny16:39

I'm going to tarp the window. Just in case.

Spread the plastic tarp over the window and use the duct tape to secure the edges to the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is starting to howl through the gaps. If the water gets in, the sketches are ruined.

🔧 Kevin16:39

Check the door seal too. Bottom edge lets spray in.

return to the kitchen and inspect the shortwave radio connections, tightening the coax at the set

💭 peek at the thought
Window's the weak point. Wind'll drive rain sideways through any gap. Good she's on it.

🌿 Jenny16:41

I'll use the towels for the base.

Squish up a heavy towel and wedge it tightly against the bottom of the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting sideways now. If the door leaks, the whole floor will be a mess.

🔧 Kevin16:41

Put the cast iron skillet behind the towel. Holds it down, stops the draft.

check the radio mast guy lines through the window, assessing tension in the rising wind

💭 peek at the thought
Towel'll soak through in ten minutes if the wind shifts. Need something heavier behind it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:43

I'll get the skillet.

Move to the stove, grab the heavy cast iron, and place it over the towel at the door.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming. If this storm hits harder than I thought, the epoxy won't matter.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:43

Mast bracket held last time. But the wind's shifting west.

pull on oilskins and boots, step onto the porch to inspect the radio mast bracket and guy lines firsthand

💭 peek at the thought
Skillet's heavy enough. Door's sealed. Now the mast — if the bracket fails again the coax snaps and we're blind.
